FiveM supports custom keybinds through the client console. You can assign a keyboard key to one command or to a sequence of commands, list existing bindings, and remove bindings later. Open the console with F8; developer mode is not required for the user binding commands covered here.
Bind a command from the F8 console
FiveM uses this syntax:
bind <mapper> <input> <command>
For a keyboard key, use keyboard as the mapper. For example:
bind keyboard F9 "say hi"
Pressing F9 now runs the client command say hi. The mapper is required, so bind F9 "say hi" is not the documented syntax.

Example: bind a key to a chat message
- Join a FiveM server.
- Press F8 to open the client console.
- Enter the following command and press Enter:
bind keyboard F6 "say Need assistance"
When you press F6, FiveM attempts to run the say command with that message. Whether a command works depends on the command being available in that client or on the connected server’s resources.

Run multiple commands with one key
Place the command sequence inside quotation marks and separate commands with semicolons:
bind keyboard F9 "say hi; wait 250; say bye"
This runs say hi, waits 250 milliseconds, and then runs say bye. The wait value is measured in milliseconds, so 1000 is approximately one second.
Quoting matters when the command contains spaces or more than one command. Without the quotes, the console may interpret the later words as separate arguments instead of part of the binding.

Remove a keybind
Use:
unbind <mapper> <input>
For example:
unbind keyboard F9
This removes all commands assigned to F9 through the keyboard mapper. It is not a command-specific delete operation. If several actions share that key, they will all be cleared.
Keyboard input names FiveM accepts
Use the documented input name rather than the key’s physical description. Common examples include:
| Key or key group | FiveM input name |
|---|---|
| Function keys | F1 through F24 |
| Spacebar | SPACE |
| Enter | RETURN |
| Escape | ESCAPE |
| Arrow keys | LEFT, RIGHT, and the other documented direction names |
| Left Control | LCONTROL |
| Left Alt | LMENU |
| Number pad 0 | NUMPAD0 |
| Grave/backtick key | OEM_3 |
| Backslash | BACKSLASH |
FiveM’s keyboard mapper is documented as KEYBOARD. The console examples use keyboard; use that form consistently in commands such as bind keyboard F9 .... FiveM also documents other mapper families, including mouse buttons, mouse wheels, and controller buttons.
Use an rbind for a resource-specific command
An ordinary bind is a client binding. An rbind associates the key with a particular resource:
rbind <resource> <mapper> <input> <command>
Example:
rbind runcode keyboard O "say hi"
This binding is conditional. Its command runs only while the named resource is active and in use on the connected server. If the resource is stopped, missing, or not running on that server, the key may appear to do nothing.

Use rbind when the command belongs specifically to a resource. Use ordinary bind for a general client-side command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsResource developers: expose an editable keybind
If you are creating a FiveM resource, use RegisterKeyMapping to expose a user-editable action instead of hard-coding a key in the script.
RegisterCommand('say hi', function()
print('Hello from the resource')
end, false)
RegisterKeyMapping('say hi', 'Say hi', 'keyboard', 'o')
The command name, description, mapper, and default key are supplied to RegisterKeyMapping. The player can then change the binding through the client’s available key-binding controls. Current FiveM documentation does not guarantee one exact menu path or button label across client versions, so menu wording may differ.
Hold-to-use actions
For an action that should remain active only while a key is held, register matching + and - commands:
local handsUp = false
RegisterCommand('+handsup', function()
handsUp = true
end, false)
RegisterCommand('-handsup', function()
handsUp = false
end, false)
RegisterKeyMapping('+handsup', 'Hands Up', 'keyboard', 'i')
FiveM calls the + command when the key is pressed and the - command when it is released. A resource would normally use the handsUp state in a loop to start and stop the relevant animation or gameplay behavior.

- 30 mappable inputs can be configured as keyboard inputs, controller/mouse inputs, or Macros. Each button is individually connected with no connection matrices
RegisterCommand is preferred over the legacy chatMessage approach because it integrates with command completion, console use, and ACL/security controls. Its third argument is a Boolean: setting restricted to true requires the corresponding command.<commandName> ACL permission.
Why a keybind may not work
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| The console rejects or ignores the bind | Check the syntax. Include the mapper: bind keyboard F9 "command". |
| The key triggers more than one action | Another command is already assigned to that input. Run bind to inspect the list. Be careful with unbind keyboard F9, because it clears every binding on F9. |
| An rbind does nothing | The specified resource may not be active, may be absent, or may not be running on the current server. |
| The command works in F8 but not from a script | An F8 bind is a client console binding. A script keybind is registered by a resource with RegisterKeyMapping; they are separate systems. |
| The command is unknown | It may be supplied by a server resource that is stopped or unavailable. Resources can add commands beyond FiveM’s standard client commands. |
| An access-denied message appears | The command may be developer-only or restricted by ACL. This does not mean the user binding commands themselves require developer mode. |
Do FiveM keybinds persist?
Cfx documentation has historically stated that additional user settings, including bindings, were stored in %AppData%CitizenFXfivem.cfg. That reference comes from an archived 2020 article, so do not assume every current client build uses exactly that file or that manually editing it is supported.
The safer approach is to create and manage bindings through the F8 console or the client’s available key-binding controls. If a binding disappears after an update or profile change, run bind again to check whether it was saved, then recreate it if necessary.

| Remove all commands from one key | unbind keyboard F9 |
FAQ
Do I need developer mode to bind a command in FiveM?
No. The documented user commands bind, rbind, and unbind are available from the F8 client console without enabling developer mode.

Use bind <mapper> <input> <command>. For a keyboard key, an example is bind keyboard F9 "say hi". The mapper cannot be omitted.

- Hall Effect switches deliver ultra-fast, adjustable actuation precision
- True 8K polling ensures lightning-fast, low-latency input response
- Durable PBT keycaps resist shine and maintain premium feel
How do I bind two commands to one key?
Put both commands in quotes and separate them with a semicolon, for example bind keyboard F9 "say hi; wait 250; say bye".
Can I remove only one command from a key?
The documented unbind syntax targets the mapper and input, and removes all commands assigned to that input. List your bindings first if you need to avoid clearing other actions.
What is the difference between bind and rbind?
bind creates a general client binding. rbind includes a resource name and runs the command only while that resource is active on the connected server.
How do FiveM resources create user-editable keybinds?
A resource registers a command with RegisterCommand, then exposes it with RegisterKeyMapping. For hold actions, resources commonly pair +action and -action commands.
The Bottom Line
For a quick personal keybind, press F8 and use bind keyboard KEY "command". Run bind to inspect existing assignments, and remember that unbind keyboard KEY clears every action on that key. Resource authors should use RegisterKeyMapping when players need to change the default key through the client.
