Microsoft Edge exposes experimental browser settings at edge://flags. These settings can test features before they become normal Edge options, restore an older behavior, or help diagnose a rendering problem. They are not ordinary preferences: a flag may be unfinished, removed in a later release, incompatible with another setting, or capable of causing crashes.
Use edge://flags for temporary testing rather than as a permanent security or performance fix. Record what you changed so you can undo it if Edge behaves differently afterward.
Open Edge’s hidden-feature page
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the address bar, type
edge://flags, and press Enter. - Use the page’s search function to find a flag by name or keyword.
- Change the control associated with the flag, then restart Edge if the page asks you to do so.
Microsoft documents edge://flags as the location for Edge feature flags. The exact wording and arrangement of the controls can change between Edge releases, so follow the option currently displayed beside the feature rather than relying on a fixed button name.

A flag is an experimental override layered on top of Edge’s default behavior. It may disappear after an update, and a flag setting does not necessarily override an administrator-enforced policy.

Enable a hidden feature
- Go to
edge://flags. - Search for the feature you want to test.
- Read the warning and the description shown for that entry.
- Choose the available option that enables the feature.
- Restart Edge when prompted. A flag normally does not take effect until the browser restarts.
Test the feature immediately after restarting. If it affects a particular website, open that site in a new tab and check the behavior. Avoid changing several unrelated flags at once; otherwise, you will not know which change caused a problem.
Disable a flag or return it to its default
Open edge://flags again, search for the feature, and select the option that restores its default behavior or disables the experiment. Restart Edge. Restoring the default is usually preferable to forcing a feature off because Edge’s normal behavior can change as the browser is updated.
If you no longer know which flags were changed, use the page’s reset facility if it is available in your Edge version, then restart the browser. Because Microsoft’s documentation does not specify the current wording of the page’s buttons, look for the reset control shown on your installation rather than relying on a particular label.

What to do when a flag causes trouble
Common symptoms include a blank page, graphical corruption, repeated crashes, missing menus, broken video, or a website that stops working. Try this sequence:
- Return to
edge://flagsand undo the most recent change. - Restart Edge completely. Close every Edge window, then open it again.
- If the page is difficult to use, reset all experimental changes from the flags page and restart.
- Check whether the problem occurs in an InPrivate window or another Edge profile. This helps distinguish a site or profile issue from a browser-wide change.
- If Edge will not start normally, remove experimental command-line arguments from the shortcut or launcher used to start it, then launch Edge normally.
Do not treat a flag as a guaranteed workaround for a broken website. The experiment may only mask the underlying problem and could reduce browser security or stability.

Why a flag may be unavailable or ineffective
Company policy can block flags
Managed Edge installations can open edge://flags while preventing users from changing anything there. The Microsoft Edge policy FeatureFlagOverridesControl controls this behavior on Windows and macOS for Edge 93 and later.

If the policy is not configured, Microsoft documents the behavior as equivalent to OverridesEnabled. The policy is not per-profile, applies to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account, and requires an Edge restart because it does not support dynamic refresh.

On Windows, administrators find the policy under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge/Experimentation. Its registry location is:
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeThe value name is FeatureFlagOverridesControl, with type REG_DWORD. A value of 0x00000001 allows users to override feature flags. Do not edit a company-managed registry setting without authorization.
On macOS, the preference key is FeatureFlagOverridesControl; Microsoft’s documented XML example for allowing overrides is:

<integer>1</integer>If this is a work or school computer, ask the administrator whether the restriction is intentional. A locked page is not necessarily an Edge fault.
A policy can take precedence over a flag
Even when Edge lets you change a flag, an enforced policy may win. Microsoft’s SitePerProcess policy is one example. When that policy is enabled, users cannot opt out of site isolation through the related “Disable site isolation” flag.
Also, disabling or leaving SitePerProcess unconfigured does not itself turn site isolation off. It only permits the user to opt out of the default behavior through the relevant flag. The policy is supported on Windows and macOS Edge 77 and later, and changes require a browser restart.
This distinction matters: a flag can expose a user choice without guaranteeing that the choice overrides enterprise policy.
Using command-line overrides
Some installations allow feature overrides through Edge’s startup command line even when the flags page is blocked. That is controlled by FeatureFlagOverridesControl; the CommandLineOverridesEnabled value allows command-line overrides but blocks changes through edge://flags.

Command-line options should be used only when you understand the option and can remove it afterward. Microsoft gives --disable-gpu-sandbox as an example of a potentially dangerous unsupported command-line flag. With command-line flag security warnings enabled or unset, Edge displays:
“You’re using an unsupported command-line flag: –disable-gpu-sandbox. This poses stability and security risks.”
The policy CommandLineFlagSecurityWarningsEnabled controls those warnings on managed Windows and macOS installations. If it is disabled, Edge suppresses warnings for potentially dangerous command-line flags; if it is enabled or unset, warnings are displayed. Suppressing the warning does not make the command safe.
On Windows, that policy is under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge and uses:

It applies to managed Windows installations joined to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, or enrolled for device management. On macOS, management through MDM or domain management through MCX is required.

Examples of flags and policy limits
Experimental controls do not all have the same lifetime or platform support. For example, Microsoft documents OriginKeyedProcessesEnabled for Windows and macOS Edge 141 and later. When enabled, most origins are isolated even from other origins within the same site, and Microsoft states that users can override it through command-line flags or edge://flags.
Microsoft also documents XSLTEnabled for Windows and macOS Edge 147 and later, while describing it as temporary and subject to removal in a future Edge release. If a feature is missing from your flags page, it may not be supported by your Edge version, platform, policy configuration, or current product release.
Safe habits when experimenting
- Change one flag at a time.
- Write down the original setting and the date you changed it.
- Restart Edge after changing a flag or policy.
- Keep Edge updated, since experimental entries can be renamed or removed.
- Do not disable security features merely to improve a benchmark or bypass a website restriction.
- Use a test profile or separate device for work that depends on reliability.
- Reset the flag before reporting an unrelated Edge problem.
FAQ
Is edge://flags safe to use?
The page itself is part of Edge, but individual experiments are not guaranteed to be stable or secure. Read each warning, change only what you need, and restore the default when testing is finished.
Why can I open edge://flags but not change a setting?
An administrator may have configured FeatureFlagOverridesControl. Its CommandLineOverridesEnabled value blocks changes through the flags page, while OverridesDisabled blocks both page and command-line overrides.
Do Edge flags work on Android or iPhone?
The policy documentation cited here lists FeatureFlagOverridesControl, SitePerProcess, and CommandLineFlagSecurityWarningsEnabled as unsupported on Android and iOS. The flags available on a mobile build can differ from those on Windows and macOS.
Will restarting Edge undo a flag?
No. Restarting applies the change; it does not automatically restore the previous setting. Return to edge://flags and restore the affected entry or reset the experimental settings.
Can an Edge flag override a company policy?
Not necessarily. Microsoft explicitly documents policies, including SitePerProcess, that can prevent a related flag from opting out of the enforced behavior.

Open edge://flags, change one experimental setting, restart Edge, and test the result. If the page is locked or a change has no effect, check for enterprise policy rather than repeatedly trying the same control. Restore experimental settings when finished, and treat command-line overrides—especially security-related ones—as administrative troubleshooting tools, not routine browser options.
