Windows does not necessarily rename a folder called Camera to Pictures. Microsoft documents the Camera app’s default capture destination as Camera Roll, which is associated with the Pictures folder. To identify where a particular photo was saved, open it in the Camera app and select … > Open Folder; that opens its actual save location.
Camera, Camera Roll, and Pictures are different labels
The Camera app is the Windows app used to take photos and videos. Microsoft says captures are saved by default in Camera Roll. Its missing-folder guidance tells users to look for Camera Roll from File Explorer’s Pictures folder. That documented relationship does not mean Windows automatically renames a directory literally called Camera to Pictures.
Also distinguish a folder’s actual name and path from where it appears in Explorer’s navigation pane. Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft’s known-folder guidance says Pictures appears by default in Quick access and the navigation pane rather than under This PC. A different Explorer location alone does not show that a folder was renamed. Microsoft’s File Explorer guide describes this layout.
Find the actual folder for a Camera app photo
- Open the photo or video in the Windows Camera app.
- Select the ellipsis (…).
- Select Open Folder. The app opens the location where that item was saved.
Check the full path and the folder’s displayed name there. This is more reliable than inferring the save location from a thumbnail or a navigation-pane label. Microsoft documents the action in its Camera app instructions.

Troubleshoot a missing or inaccessible Camera Roll
Check the selected save destination
In Storage settings, review New photos and videos will save to. The route differs by Windows version:
- Windows 11: Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
- Windows 10: Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved.
If the selected destination is an external drive or other removable device, make sure it is connected. These steps and labels are from Microsoft’s missing Camera Roll guidance.

Check whether Camera Roll exists and is writable
From File Explorer, inspect the Pictures folder for Camera Roll. If it is missing, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes creating a Camera Roll folder and including it in the Camera Roll library. If the folder exists but saving fails, open its Properties, check the Security tab, and confirm the signed-in user has Write permission.
What to check if a folder is literally named Camera
If Explorer appears to show Pictures where you expected a directory named Camera, use Open Folder for a captured item, then inspect the full path and exact folder name. The Microsoft support guidance cited here explains the Camera Roll/Pictures relationship and Explorer’s navigation layout; it does not establish that Windows changes a literal Camera directory’s name or display label to Pictures. Avoid treating a navigation-pane position as proof of a rename.
