Hard drive repair and data recovery are different services, so the first step is to ask what the quote is meant to accomplish. Repair aims to return a drive to service; recovery aims to retrieve files, often by copying them to separate storage. In published U.S. examples, one recovery provider lists jobs from $100 for copying data from a working drive to $2,000 for platter surface damage, while Western Digital cites about $1,000–$2,000 for a one-drive Ontrack Standard Service recovery. These are provider-specific figures, not a market average or a quote for your drive.
Repair and data recovery buy different outcomes
A repair is intended to make the drive usable again. Data recovery is an attempt to retrieve files; it does not necessarily restore the original drive to working condition. Rossmann Group describes its recovery process as imaging platters sector by sector onto healthy media. That is the provider’s description of its approach, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same method or can recover every file. Rossmann Group’s service and pricing information describes its prices by failure class rather than by the drive’s purchase price or the amount of data stored.
Before comparing prices, tell the provider whether your priority is getting particular files back or having a working drive. If you need both, ask whether the quote includes both outcomes; do not assume a successful recovery includes repair.

Published U.S. price examples
The figures below are examples from the named providers, not a representative price survey. Rossmann Group’s 2026 pricing page lists the following scenario-based prices. It says prices are plus tax and the target drive, and donor parts are additional on mechanical tiers. It also notes higher prices for some helium-sealed HDDs. Check the provider’s current terms and pricing for the specific case.

| One-drive Ontrack Standard Service recovery | About $1,000–$2,000 | Western Digital’s current U.S. page, accessed in 2026; applies to its description of Standard Service without a WD Data Recovery Plan, not to every drive or service. |
Western Digital says recovery cost varies with service level, device type, cause of data loss, and drive condition. Its stated range is specific to the service described on its page and is not a diagnosis or estimate for an individual drive. See Western Digital’s data recovery information.
What changes the total price
The failure class is a major pricing factor in Rossmann Group’s published tiers: a simple copy from a working drive is priced differently from firmware work or mechanical damage. The final amount can also depend on charges outside the listed service price.

- Destination storage: Rossmann Group lists the target drive as an additional cost. Ask what capacity and type the provider needs to return recovered files.
- Tax and shipping: The Rossmann Group pricing page says prices are plus tax and identifies shipping as a question to clarify for the job.
- Rush handling: Ask whether expedited service changes the price; do not assume it is included.
- Device construction: Rossmann Group notes higher pricing for some helium-sealed HDDs.
- Service level and condition: Western Digital identifies service level, device type, cause, and drive condition as factors affecting recovery cost.
Rossmann Group publishes turnaround estimates that vary by scenario, from days for a simple copy to weeks for more involved cases. Those are the provider’s estimates, not a guaranteed delivery date; ask what estimate applies after diagnosis and what could change it.
Questions to get answered before authorizing work
- What result does the quote cover? Is the job intended to restore the drive, retrieve files, or both? Ask what specific result is included.
- What will diagnosis cost? Rossmann Group says its listed work begins with a free diagnostic and describes no-data/no-fee terms for qualifying jobs. Confirm the exact terms that apply to your case rather than assuming the offer covers every outcome.
- Is the price fixed after evaluation? Ask whether the provider will seek approval before adding charges or changing the scope.
- Which extras apply? Get a written breakdown for donor parts, tax, shipping, rush handling, and destination storage.
- How is partial recovery handled? Ask what counts as success for payment purposes if only some files are retrieved. The cited provider and manufacturer pages do not establish one industry-wide definition.
- What is the estimated turnaround? Request a case-specific estimate and ask what diagnosis or parts availability could delay it.
- Could the work affect warranty coverage? Check the policy for your exact product and region before approving service.
Check warranty terms before sending a drive
Warranty implications depend on the manufacturer, product, region, and circumstances. Western Digital says it does not repair drives or recommend repair services, warns that repairs can void warranty, and says it does not provide data recovery itself. It directs customers to third-party partners while disclaiming responsibility for those providers. Its support page states: “Western Digital does not repair or recommend repair services for drives.” Read Western Digital’s repair and recovery guidance.

Apple says data-recovery attempts are not covered by Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare. It also says eligible products recovered by an Apple-recommended recovery company can be returned to Apple for service. Review Apple’s data-recovery information. Toshiba warns that non-authorized repair or recovery may affect warranty in circumstances involving misuse, tampering, or improper handling. Check Toshiba’s support guidance. Confirm the policy that applies to your particular device before authorizing a third party.
When a manufacturer recovery plan may be an option
Western Digital describes a paid data recovery plan that includes one in-lab attempt and shipping, subject to eligibility and plan terms. Its separate plan page advertises a starting one-time payment for qualifying products sold through its store; price and availability can change. This is not a blanket offer for every existing drive, so verify that your specific product qualifies and read the applicable terms before relying on the plan. Review Western Digital’s recovery-plan information and check plan availability and eligibility.
