Canon Error 99 (Err 99) is a general error code on some EOS cameras, not a diagnosis of one specific failed part. The right next step depends on your camera model: follow the message on screen and the instructions in that model’s manual, then try only basic, reversible checks. If the same error continues, note the code and contact Canon service.
What does Error 99 mean on a Canon camera?
On some older EOS cameras, Err 99 indicates an error not covered by the camera’s other listed codes. The EOS 350D manual explains that a non-Canon lens may be involved if the camera or lens does not operate properly. Canon support guidance for other cameras gives general restart and battery instructions, but that does not establish a universal cause.
Canon’s EOS 350D manual says: “This error may occur if you use a non-Canon lens and the camera or lens does not operate properly.” Read the EOS 350D manual. This is a model-specific note, not proof that a third-party lens—or any particular part—is responsible for every Err 99.
Claims that Err 99 always means a failed shutter, dirty contacts, or a bad battery go beyond what Canon’s general guidance establishes. Treat the code as a prompt to troubleshoot and, if needed, get a service diagnosis.

Start with the exact camera model and message
Error-code descriptions and instructions differ among EOS models. Find your camera’s model name and check its manual or Canon support page for the exact code. Record when the error appears—such as at startup, after pressing the shutter, or while saving an image—and whether it began after a lens or card change. If the display gives a specific instruction, follow that first.

Restart the camera as instructed
Canon’s general guidance says to switch the camera off and on again or remove and reinstall the battery. Follow the procedure in your model’s manual; do not force the battery door or remove a battery while the camera is writing data.

Check whether the lens is involved
With the camera switched off, check the manual’s lens-handling instructions. If you have a compatible lens that is known to work, try it as a diagnostic comparison. If Err 99 occurs only with one lens, that lens or its communication with the camera is a plausible area to investigate; the test does not prove a specific fault. Canon’s EOS 350D manual specifically mentions possible issues involving a non-Canon lens.

Clean accessible electrical contacts only if appropriate
Canon recommends cleaning electrical contacts in guidance for lens communication problems. If your model’s instructions permit it, use a clean, soft cloth on accessible contacts. Keep debris out of the camera body, and do not use liquids or abrasive tools unless the camera or lens maker specifically directs you to.

Check the card only when the symptoms or manual point to it
Err 99 by itself does not establish that a memory card is faulty. If the camera shows a separate card-specific error, follow that model’s card instructions. For a relevant card check, Canon guidance may call for reinserting, replacing, or formatting the card; use a compatible card specified for your camera.

Back up images before formatting
Formatting erases card data. Copy any images you need before formatting, and do not format a card that may contain the only copy of important photos.

Stop if the error persists
Canon advises noting the code and contacting a service center when the same error keeps appearing. A service technician can diagnose the camera and lens; Err 99 alone cannot identify which component needs attention.

What to tell Canon service
Useful details include the full camera model, the exact displayed code, when it occurs, the lens and card in use, any recent changes, and which reversible checks you tried. Mention whether the error followed one lens or appeared with multiple compatible lenses. These observations help describe the fault without assuming its cause.

Canon’s support instruction is: “If the same error keeps appearing, there may be a problem.
