A trigon knob is a three-lobed hand knob, also sold as a three-arm or three-prong knob. There is no universal best choice: the right one must match your machine’s mounting and thread, available space, material needs, and the force and grip required for the task.
What does “trigon knob” mean?
“Trigon,” “three-lobe,” “three-arm,” and “three-prong” describe a broad family of hand knobs with three projecting lobes. Suppliers may use these terms for related styles rather than an identical product design, so check the exact shape and mounting details in the product listing. GlobalSpec’s industrial knobs selection guide discusses lobed knobs, while Elesa’s clamping grip catalog includes three-arm models and the Essentra Components / Innovative Components catalog includes trigon knobs.
What should you check before choosing one?
1. Match the mounting and thread
Start with the machine’s existing fastener or mounting point. A knob with a projecting stud is not interchangeable with one that has a female threaded insert or a through-hole. Confirm the thread specification and mounting arrangement in the supplier’s listing, then compare them with the machine or the knob being replaced. Davies Molding’s 3025AK, for example, is listed with a 10-32 projecting stud; that specification applies to that model, not to trigon knobs generally. See the 3025AK product listing.
2. Check dimensions and clearance
Measure the available space around the mounting point and consider how much room the operator’s hand needs to turn the knob. Compare the knob’s diameter and height, as well as any hub dimensions shown in the listing. A knob can have the correct thread and still be unsuitable if its arms strike nearby parts or there is not enough room to grip it.

Davies Molding lists its 3025AK at 1.13 inches (28.7 mm) in diameter and 0.75 inches (19.05 mm) high. Those dimensions describe the 3025AK only; they are not a general size for three-arm knobs.
3. Select a material and surface for the setting
Catalogs include options such as technopolymer, soft-touch polymer, and phenolic. Choose based on the machine’s operating environment and the handling requirements, and check the manufacturer’s material and product specifications for the particular model. A material label by itself does not establish suitability for a specific temperature, chemical exposure, or other operating condition.

4. Match the knob to the control task
Lobed knobs are commonly presented as useful for hand adjustment and clamping. The GlobalSpec selection guide associates lobed knobs with precise control and high torque; manufacturer catalogs describe three-arm knobs in terms of maneuverability and hand adjustment. These are category-level descriptions, not measured performance guarantees or a torque rating for every model. If the application requires a particular clamping force or torque, look for a specification for the exact knob and mechanism rather than inferring it from the shape.
How catalog examples differ
These examples show why a product’s configuration matters more than the category name. They are catalog examples, not tested recommendations or evidence that a model will fit a particular machine.

A fit checklist before ordering
- Identify whether the machine needs a projecting stud, female threaded insert, or through-hole mounting.
- Verify the thread specification and mounting arrangement against the machine or replacement knob.
