You can build a simple 3D scene in Spline’s browser editor, but the MCP customization step requires Spline’s desktop app on macOS or Windows. The MCP server is built into that app and connects an MCP-compatible client to an open editor tab; it does not run from Spline’s browser editor. Spline’s MCP documentation explains the handoff.
What you’re building—and where each step happens
Spline is a tool for creating interactive 3D and 2D experiences. Its 3D editor includes tools for modeling, materials, lighting, animation, and physics. Spline’s site describes its browser-based creation workflow.
For this beginner exercise, make a compact scene: a platform, one object sitting on it, a material on each, and a light. These are suggested steps for a manageable first asset, not a promise that an automated edit will produce a particular result.
Make a simple scene in the browser editor
- Start a scene. Open Spline’s browser editor and create a new 3D scene.
- Add a platform. Create a basic shape to serve as the floor or pedestal. Keep its proportions simple so the main object remains the focus.
- Add one object. Place a sphere or another basic shape on the platform. Move or scale it until the two forms read clearly as a single composition.
- Set materials. Give the platform and object distinct materials so their surfaces are easy to distinguish. Choose restrained colors for the first pass; you can refine them later.
- Add a light. Adjust the scene’s lighting until the object and platform are visible. Check the composition from the view you want to present.
- Save and inspect. Review the scene in the editor before handing it off. MCP edits are requests to modify the live scene, so a clear starting point makes it easier to judge what changed.
Move from the browser to MCP
The environment changes here: Spline’s MCP server is built into its desktop app, documented for macOS and Windows. The MCP connection does not work from the browser, and Spline says a separate Spline MCP package is not required. See Spline’s MCP setup documentation for current connection details.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Download and open the Spline desktop app for macOS or Windows.
- Open the scene in the desktop editor and leave its editor tab available. Spline describes MCP as working with open editor tabs.
- Connect an MCP-compatible client to the built-in Spline MCP server, following Spline’s current setup instructions for that client. Client compatibility and setup details can vary; the documentation does not establish that every MCP client works.
- Ask the client for a specific edit. For example, Spline’s documentation illustrates a request for a rotating glass sphere on a pedestal with soft studio lighting. Treat a prompt as an instruction to attempt changes, not a guarantee that the scene will match the description exactly.
- Inspect the open scene in Spline and refine any result that needs adjustment. Check the object, materials, lighting, and animation in the editor rather than assuming the request was applied as intended.
What MCP changes in this workflow
The client sends an editing request through Spline’s MCP server, which is part of the desktop app; Spline describes the server as working with the scene in an open editor tab. That makes MCP a way to request edits to the live scene, not a browser-only mode or a substitute for checking the result in the editor. The scene itself begins in the browser, while MCP customization moves to the desktop app.
When another 3D tool may fit better
These options address different kinds of work. Their MCP or agent features should not be treated as interchangeable with Spline’s live-scene editing workflow.
