How do I change Narrator math reading navigation mode in Windows 11? The phrase can mean three separate controls: the Math punctuation level, Narrator cursor Navigation mode, or scan mode. To make Narrator speak most mathematical symbols, cycle punctuation levels with the Narrator key plus Alt and a bracket key. To change how the Narrator cursor moves, choose Normal or Advanced in Narrator Settings.
Set the Math punctuation level
Math is a punctuation-reading level, not a navigation model. Microsoft describes it as a way to hear most mathematical symbols; it does not guarantee that every expression will be read correctly in every app or format. See Microsoft’s Chapter 4: Reading text.
- Use the Narrator key. Caps Lock and Insert are the defaults; if you changed the Narrator key preference, use the key you selected.
- Press Narrator + Alt + ] to cycle punctuation levels in one direction, or Narrator + Alt + [ to cycle in the other direction.
- Keep pressing the shortcut until Narrator announces Math.
The bracket shortcuts cycle through punctuation levels, so the number of presses depends on the level currently selected.

This separate setting controls how the Narrator cursor moves through content. Microsoft recommends Normal mode. In Normal, Narrator can move among items such as links and tables. Advanced mode uses the four arrow keys to move the Narrator cursor through an application’s programmatic representation.

- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator Settings.
- Find Navigation mode.
- Select Normal or Advanced.
For details, see Microsoft’s Narrator reading-text guidance. Narrator’s default key is Caps Lock or Insert, and the setting can be changed to Caps Lock, Insert, or both; use the configured Narrator key when a shortcut calls for it.
Toggle scan mode separately
Scan mode is not the Math punctuation level or the Normal/Advanced Navigation mode setting. Toggle it with Narrator + Spacebar. When scan mode is on, Up and Down navigate apps and webpages. Microsoft notes that it can turn on automatically in Mail, Outlook, Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Windows apps where it was previously enabled. See Microsoft’s Narrator documentation.

Microsoft’s cited Narrator guidance lists Windows 11 and Windows 10, but does not identify an exact Windows 11 build. The labels and shortcuts here are based on that guidance.
