To sync a game save to another device, first confirm that the specific game supports the transfer you want, then use the same game account or platform account and let the last session finish uploading. A platform’s cloud save may sync files only within that platform; it does not automatically mean your progress follows you between different consoles, storefronts, or operating systems.
Cloud saves and cross-platform progression are different
Cloud save usually means a platform stores a game’s save files online and restores them on another supported device using that platform. Cross-platform progression means a game makes progress available across different platforms, often through a game account or developer-managed service. A game can offer one without the other, and neither feature is universal.
Support is specific to each game. Steam says many games do not use Steam Cloud, and directs players to check the game’s store listing or developer support page: Steam Cloud troubleshooting. Even when a game supports cloud saves, its configured file paths and sync settings determine which operating systems can share them. Separate operating-system roots can leave saves partitioned rather than portable: Steamworks Cloud documentation.

A game may instead use its own save service. For example, PlayFab describes developer-managed game saves with synchronization and conflict-resolution behavior: PlayFab Game Saves overview.

Check support before switching devices
- Look up the exact game. Check its store listing and official support page for cloud-save support or cross-progression. Confirm the platforms and storefronts named, not just a general claim that the game “supports cloud saves.”
- Identify the account the game uses. If progress is tied to a game account, sign in with that same account on the destination device. Follow the game’s linking or first-launch steps; using the same console or PC platform account may not be enough.
- Finish the old session’s upload. Close or exit the game normally and wait for the platform client or game to finish syncing. If possible, reopen it and verify that the intended save is present before moving on.
- Open the game on the destination device. Use the intended account and allow the game to complete any initial sync or account-linking flow. Check in-game progress before continuing to play.
- Keep the original device available. Do not erase or trade it in until the destination has loaded the expected save. Steam notes that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve a conflict for a player: Steam Support.
Resolve a cloud-save conflict carefully
A conflict can occur when two devices have different local saves—for example, if one was played offline while another continued online. When syncing resumes, the system may ask which version to keep. Epic advises choosing the newer file, but checking that its date and progress match the session you want to preserve: Epic cloud-save conflict help.
- Read the timestamps shown for both versions and compare them with when you played on each device.
- Inspect any available progress details, such as the level, mission, or in-game save state, rather than relying on the timestamp alone.
- Select the version that contains the progress you intend to keep. Do not assume the system can merge two files; Epic’s account guidance says differing progress cannot be combined.
- After resolving the prompt, let syncing finish and verify the chosen progress in the game before making more changes.
If the displayed time does not match your play history, pause before choosing. A time zone, offline session, or unexpected upload can make a timestamp less useful as a guide; the relevant question is which file contains the session you want to keep.

Compare save systems by their actual boundaries
When deciding whether a game’s saves will follow you, compare the feature’s coverage and behavior rather than relying on the phrase “cloud save.”
- Coverage: Which devices, operating systems, storefronts, and console generations are included?
- Mechanism: Is it platform file sync, linked game accounts, or a save service run by the developer?
- Sync steps: Is syncing automatic or manual? Does the game need to launch on each platform before progress appears?
- Conflicts and recovery: Does the game prompt you to choose, select a version automatically, or expose another recovery option? Can overwritten progress be restored?
- Offline play: What happens if more than one device makes progress while disconnected?
- Version compatibility: Can a save created by one version still be read if updates reach different storefronts at different times?
Platform cloud storage has defined boundaries too. PlayStation describes syncing PS5 console and cloud data to the most recent data, while Steamworks documents developer-configured operating-system coverage. Neither description establishes that a subscription or platform cloud feature guarantees cross-buy, cross-play, or a shared save between separate platform accounts: PlayStation PS5 cloud storage support; Steamworks Cloud documentation.

Why a save can fail to transfer
- The game does not support it. Cloud saves and cross-progression are game-specific, even on a platform with cloud-storage features.
- The save paths differ. A developer’s platform or operating-system configuration may sync one location but not another, leaving saves separated by device or OS.
- The wrong account is active. Platform account linking and a game’s own identity system may be distinct. Progress can appear missing if the destination uses a different game account.
- Devices played offline. Each may have produced a valid but different save, creating a conflict when they reconnect.
- The game versions differ. Updates may arrive at different times on different storefronts, and a newer version’s save format may affect compatibility with an older version.
What developers need to plan for
Cross-platform saves are an implementation decision, not an automatic outcome of enabling cloud storage. Developers need to account for platform-specific paths, account identity, offline play, conflict resolution, and differences in when updates reach storefronts. Steamworks documents configurable cloud paths and operating-system roots; PlayFab documents save synchronization, conflict resolution, and offline play; Xbox’s Game Saves documentation describes a synchronization flow with conflict prompts. These describe platform and service behaviors, not guarantees that apply to every game:
