Copilot in Word can help draft content, revise selected text, organize material, summarize a document, and answer questions about what it contains. What you can use depends on your Microsoft 365 license, organization settings, Word version and platform, and whether a feature has reached your account.
1. Start a draft from a prompt
Give Copilot a brief describing what you need, then specify details such as the audience, purpose, tone, format, or approximate length. You can also provide an outline, notes, or referenced files as source material. Treat the result as a starting draft: review it, then keep, discard, or refine it. See Microsoft’s overview of Copilot in Word and its guide to drafting and adding content.
2. Follow an existing document’s structure
When creating new material, ask Copilot to use the format or structure of an existing document or template. This can help a new draft follow an established layout—for example, the sections and conventions of a report. Check the output against the source structure; matching a format does not guarantee that the new content is complete or accurate.
3. Add material to the document you have open
Ask Copilot to add a section, paragraph, checklist, or table to the current document. This is an in-document task: Microsoft says the documented Edit with Copilot experience cannot create a separate new Word file. For a new file, start one yourself in Word and use Copilot to draft or add content there. The Edit with Copilot guide describes the experience and its availability.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
4. Rewrite selected text
Select a passage and ask for a rewrite. You can request a different tone or a more concise version, then inspect the suggested wording before inserting or replacing the original. Check that the revision preserves the intended meaning, names, qualifications, and any important detail. Microsoft explains the workflow in its guide to editing and rewriting content.
5. Reorganize and format content
Copilot can help reshape material in supported ways. For example, select text and ask it to turn the information into a table; review the proposed result and choose whether to use, insert, or regenerate it. This can make existing information easier to scan, but check that the structure preserves the relationships between the details.

6. Summarize a long document
Ask Copilot for a summary or key points in chat. Depending on your license and settings, a summary may also appear when you open a document. A summary is a shortcut to the material, not a substitute for checking the original when a detail matters. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Word FAQ for examples and availability information.
7. Ask questions about what a document says
Use Copilot to ask about details, clarify a section, identify action items or open questions, or explain a passage. Microsoft says responses can include references to where information came from in the document. Follow those references back to the text when accuracy matters, and distinguish what the document actually states from any interpretation in the response.

8. Create and edit in place with Edit with Copilot
The newer Edit with Copilot experience can create, refine, format, and restructure content directly in a document. It is not available to everyone: Microsoft describes it as rolling out and subject to license availability. In some shared-document circumstances, suggested changes can be reviewed before they are applied. The controls and behavior depend on the editing mode and Track Changes settings, so inspect the options shown in your version before accepting changes.
What Copilot in Word cannot do
Microsoft’s guidance identifies several tasks Copilot does not support: creating a separate new Word file, providing an exact word count, creating native Word charts, or directly moving, resizing, or editing existing media. Use Word’s own file, word-count, chart, and media controls for those jobs. See Microsoft’s list of things to keep in mind.

Who can use these features?
Microsoft says Copilot in Word requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Microsoft Copilot license. If Copilot is missing, check that you are signed in with the intended account, confirm the subscription and any organization controls, and make sure Word is up to date. Edit with Copilot has its own license and rollout conditions, and feature visibility can also vary by platform and app version. Microsoft’s Word Copilot overview and Edit with Copilot information describe those conditions.
