For component video, the three video plugs are usually green for Y, blue for Pb, and red for Pr. Match each plug to the same label on the TV and source device. If the cable bundle also has a red plug, check whether it belongs to the component-video group or to the separate audio pair.
Which color goes to each component-video connection?
Component video, also called YPbPr, carries video over three separate connections:
- Green: Y
- Blue: Pb (sometimes labeled Cb)
- Red: Pr (sometimes labeled Cr)
Nintendo’s Wii connection instructions identify the video plugs as green Y, blue Pb/Cb, and red Pr/Cr. Sony gives the same green-to-Y, blue-to-Pb, and red-to-Pr mapping in its component-video troubleshooting guidance.
How can you tell the red video plug from the red audio plug?
Some component cable bundles include a second red plug for right-channel audio, as well as a white plug for left-channel or mono audio. Nintendo distinguishes those audio plugs from the red Pr/Cr video plug. Identify the video plug by its Y/Pb/Pr or Y/Cb/Cr group and the labels at the device jacks—not by red color alone.

What if the device labels or jack colors differ?
Match the signal labels at both ends: Y to Y, Pb to Pb (or Cb), and Pr to Pr (or Cr). Some equipment uses labels such as Y/U/V; Philips lists these alongside Y/Pb/Pr variants in its component-video connection guidance. Philips describes the video signal as split across Y, U, and V lines and notes that the plugs and corresponding jacks are usually red, green, and blue. Follow the device manual and signal labels if the colors do not match: incorrect connections can distort picture colors or prevent a picture.
How should you connect and check the cable?
- Find the component-video input on the TV and output on the source device. Confirm that both have compatible component connections.
- Connect green to Y, blue to Pb/Cb, and red to Pr/Cr at both ends, following the printed labels if colors conflict.
- If the bundle has separate audio plugs, connect red audio to right and white audio to left or mono, as labeled on the devices.
- Select the TV input connected to the source. If the picture has incorrect colors or does not appear, recheck each labeled connection and the selected input.
If you need a cable, look for a three-plug YPbPr component-video cable and verify that the TV and source have compatible jacks before buying. Video and stereo audio may require separate connections.
