To trace an MCP tool call in production, instrument the caller or MCP client, the MCP server, and each downstream service the tool invokes; propagate trace context across the MCP request; then export and inspect the resulting telemetry. An MCP span alone shows the protocol boundary, not necessarily the database query, HTTP request, or other work performed inside the tool.
What an end-to-end MCP trace needs to show
A useful trace connects the call across the parts of the system that handle it:
- Client: the agent or application initiating the MCP request.
- MCP transport and server: the request crossing the protocol boundary and the server handling it.
- Downstream work: HTTP, database, queue, or other operations triggered by the tool.
Each boundary needs suitable instrumentation, and trace context must travel between them. OpenTelemetry can provide a portable way to instrument and export telemetry, but enabling one integration does not automatically capture every component or signal. The OpenTelemetry MCP demo, for example, pairs MCP instrumentation with separate HTTPX instrumentation for outbound API calls. OpenTelemetry MCP service documentation

1. Map the call path
Draw the route from the agent or application through its client SDK and transport, into the MCP server handler, and onward to every dependency the tool uses. Note where each component runs and who owns its instrumentation. This map helps distinguish an absent span from a call that never crossed a particular boundary.

2. Instrument the MCP client and server
Use instrumentation supported by the language SDK and version you deploy. For the official TypeScript MCP SDK v2, Telemetry.dev’s integration documentation says to instrument each transport before calling client.connect() or server.connect(). It describes JSON-RPC request spans on both sides when both are instrumented, with attributes such as method, request ID, protocol version, session ID when available, errors, and method-specific details. It labels tools/call as execute_tool. These are claims about that integration, not universal MCP behavior. Telemetry.dev MCP tracing integration
The Python SDK documents a different implementation: each MCPServer and low-level Server emits one SERVER span per inbound message by default, and its tools/call spans use OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions. Check the documentation for the exact SDK release in use rather than assuming Python behavior applies to another language. MCP Python SDK documentation

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
3. Propagate trace context through MCP
Confirm that the caller’s trace context reaches the server and that the server’s spans continue the same trace. An MCP Blog release-candidate announcement dated July 28, 2026 describes W3C Trace Context keys—traceparent, tracestate, and baggage—in request _meta. Because that source is a release-candidate announcement, check the current MCP specification and the SDKs and gateways in your path before relying on the behavior. Propagation can fail at a transport or gateway even when both endpoints emit spans. Inspect the actual request metadata and verify parent-child relationships in a test trace. The Python SDK documentation also says that, when inbound context is absent, the server span parents to the current server context; do not treat that as proof that context arrived from the client.

It's a must-have for stocking stuffers for men and women, tools gifts for dad, tech gadgets for men, gifts for dad, gifts for him, gifts for husband, gifts for boyfriend, cool gadgets for men, and cool gifts for dad.
4. Instrument the work triggered by the tool
Add instrumentation for each downstream dependency that matters to diagnosing the tool: for example, HTTP client calls, database operations, or queue activity. The MCP span identifies the protocol operation; dependency spans explain where time was spent and which operation failed. In OpenTelemetry’s example, HTTPX instrumentation is enabled separately from MCP instrumentation for outbound API calls. OpenTelemetry MCP service documentation
5. Export telemetry and inspect traces
Configure the SDKs to export through your chosen OpenTelemetry path, then use a backend that can query the attributes your instrumentation emits. Google Cloud documents one concrete method: filter MCP server spans where mcp.method.name equals tools/call, then explore the matching spans in Trace Explorer. This is a Google Cloud workflow, not a requirement to use that backend. Google Cloud Trace documentation

Check signals separately: traces, metrics, and logs
Span collection does not establish that metrics are exported or that logs are correlated with traces. Verify each signal’s configuration and coverage independently. The OpenTelemetry demo enables metrics unless disabled in its configuration, but sends standard-library logs to stdout for collection by the container runtime rather than exporting them through a LoggerProvider; those logs are not correlated with its traces. Grafana’s MCP documentation describes an implementation with Prometheus metrics, OpenTelemetry distributed tracing, and log export; it also documents use of traceparent and tracestate in _meta when present. This illustrates that broader signal coverage requires configuration and should be checked against the version you deploy. Grafana MCP observability documentation

Validate what production will record
In staging, exercise representative paths and inspect the emitted spans and other signals rather than assuming an integration captures them all:
- Successful tool call.
- Tool-level error and downstream dependency failure.
- Transport error and cancellation.
- Notification, which may not create a processing span.
For example, Telemetry.dev’s TypeScript SDK v2 integration says notifications do not produce processing spans and that the integration emits no metrics. A missing span or metric can therefore reflect integration behavior rather than a backend query issue; confirm coverage for the exact SDK and integration you use. Telemetry.dev MCP tracing integration
Check that recorded outcomes distinguish application-level tool errors from successful transport handling, and that a downstream failure appears where expected. Also review which tool attributes and request data are collected, how sensitive data is controlled, and how sampling and retention are configured. The cited documentation does not establish comparable costs, retention terms, or performance figures, so choose an export path and backend against your own privacy and operational requirements rather than an unsupported ranking.
