Ravelo’s central idea is simple: earn screen time by focusing, then spend that balance to unlock selected entertainment apps. Its builder spent six months shaping the idea into a product—and the hardest part was not the bank metaphor. It was choosing rules that felt fair while still locking apps predictably.

Why turn screen time into a balance?

In a September 23, 2026, first-person account, Ravelo builder Rakovskyy describes starting from a familiar problem: a person can set a screen-time restriction and later remove or ignore it. They say Opal stopped working for them in the second week because they forgot to start a focus session or removed a limit. Rakovskyy explicitly frames this as a problem with their own approach, not a general criticism of Opal.

The proposed alternative was to make access something earned and consciously spent. In the first version, finishing a focus session earned minutes that could unlock selected apps. The bank metaphor came later: a balance, deposits, purchases, and transactions made the abstract exchange easier to understand. The intended distinction is that entertainment access is not simply allowed or forbidden; it is tied to a balance accumulated through focus.

How the rules changed during the beta

Early testing exposed practical questions that a simple earn-and-spend model leaves open. Rakovskyy reports making several changes in response to testers’ feedback and observed behavior:

#1 Best Overall
Rotating Productivity Timer 5/25/10/50, Desk Flip Timer, ADHD Tool
  • A Real 5/25 Task Timer. The 5/25 working or studying technique is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by 5 -minute breaks. We have preset 5, 25 minutes for you, you don’t have to set it every time by yourself. Other similar cube timers in the market are not real 5/25 timers as they don’t have preset 5, 25 minutes.
  • Rotating Productivity Timer with Gra vity Sensor. We have preset 5, 25, 10, 50 minutes for gra vity sensing mode. You only need to flip the timer to the preset number with facing upwards, and then it will automatically start to countdown. Flip the timer screen facing upwards to stop the timing; Flip the timer screen facing downwards to reset it to zero.
  • Support Custom Modes. You can also adjust this digital timer to other values that you want as it supports 00-99 minutes and 59 seconds timing. You can also adjust it to countdown mode or stopwatch mode.
  • 3 Volume Levels: Silent/High Volume/Low Volume. In silent mode, the vibration is noticeable at your desk without disturbing others nearby. High volume: 90-100dB; Low volume: 70-80dB.
  • Great for Work, School, Office, Kitchen. This cube timer with stylish and aesthetic design is a great present for students, friends, or coworkers, and families, people with ADHD, using it for work/ office, back to school & off to college/ classroom/study, workout, kitchen, etc.
  • Pausing access: Purchased time initially continued to run after someone stopped using an app. The builder says they explored a model that could pause when the app was not actively being used.
  • Smaller purchases: The initial purchase intervals were 15 or 20 minutes. Testers asked for shorter windows, including five minutes.
  • Completing focus commitments: An earlier version credited partial focus sessions. The builder says they changed the rule so the planned session had to be completed to receive the full reward.

These are product decisions reported by the builder, not evidence that all users prefer the same rules. They show how much the experience depends on details: whether time runs while an app sits idle, how small a purchase can be, and whether a missed commitment earns anything.

Usage-based minutes or a time window?

The most consequential design choice was how to charge the balance. Rakovskyy describes testing two approaches. Testers preferred usage-based spending, according to the builder, because it deducted time only during active app use. But in the builder’s implementation, the lock could not be relied on to engage at the exact instant the purchased usage ran out. The alternative—an access window measured by clock time—was less exact about idle time but offered a more predictable boundary.

Question Usage-based access Time-window access
When does the balance decrease? While the selected app is actively used. During an access window measured by clock time; the builder says the window could be paused.
What happens if the app is left idle? Idle time is not charged under the described model. Time in the window can pass even when the app is not actively used.
How predictable is the lock at the boundary? The builder says their implementation could not reliably block at the exact usage threshold. The builder chose this model to make enforcement more predictable.
What trade-off does it make? More closely matches active use, but the builder observed timing uncertainty. May charge for minutes not actively used, in exchange for a more predictable access period.

Rakovskyy’s choice was a trade-off, not a claim that clock-time charging is inherently fairer. The usage model better matched the idea of paying only for what you use; the time window better matched the promise that access would end predictably. As the builder put it, “I would rather ship a slightly less elegant promise that Ravelo can keep than a perfect idea it can only enforce most of the time.” That is a product philosophy, not an independent finding about what works best for users.

Why Apple’s Screen Time frameworks mattered

The builder says Ravelo used Apple’s FamilyControls, DeviceActivity, and ManagedSettings frameworks. In their testing, DeviceActivity threshold callbacks were not hard real-time, so the app could not depend on a callback arriving precisely when a usage allowance expired. That reported implementation experience is the reason given for preferring a time window; it should not be read as a universal timing guarantee or limitation for every app or framework version.

There was also a mismatch between the short access windows testers wanted and the scheduling system the builder was using. Rakovskyy says that system expected an interval of at least 15 minutes. To represent a five-minute request within that interval, they describe treating the first ten minutes as already elapsed. This is an account of their implementation, not a general recipe or a statement that Apple requires every Screen Time app to use the same workaround.

What Ravelo is now—and what the story does not prove

Ravelo’s current official site describes an iPhone focus app that blocks selected distracting apps by default, awards Time Currency for productive app use and focus sessions, and lets users spend that balance to unlock selected entertainment: Ravelo’s current product site. A regional App Store listing identifies “Ravelo: Screen Time Banking” as an iPhone app, which establishes that a listing exists but does not demonstrate performance or outcomes.

The current product description is separate from the earlier build decisions in Rakovskyy’s account; features and rules can change over time. The site also advertises a free download and paid Pro features, but those marketing statements are not efficacy evidence. The available account is a builder’s narrative, not a controlled study: it does not establish that Ravelo causes lower screen time, improves wellbeing, or produces lasting behavior change.

Ravelo’s July 27, 2026, privacy policy says core Screen Time selections and raw FamilyControls tokens are handled on-device, while account features may involve server-side syncing of selected activity history and settings.
