To convert an M4A file to MP3, use Apple Music or GarageBand on a Mac, or import the file into Audacity and export it as MP3. Make a new copy rather than renaming the file extension: conversion changes the audio encoding, while renaming does not. Before converting, check whether the destination accepts M4A/AAC; MP3 is useful for compatibility, but converting from one lossy format to another cannot restore audio information already discarded.
Choose a method for your computer
| Method | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music or GarageBand | Mac users | Apple documents both apps for converting M4A to MP3. Follow Apple’s current on-screen instructions because menu names and controls can vary by app version. |
| Audacity | Users who want configurable export controls or a cross-platform audio editor | Audacity supports MP3 export. Importing M4A may require FFmpeg, depending on platform and installation. |
Apple’s instructions are for Mac. Audacity’s format support and dependency details can vary by platform and version. Neither workflow is a universal winner; choose the one available on your computer and accepted by the destination.
Convert an M4A file with Audacity
-
Open Audacity and import the M4A file. If Audacity cannot open it, FFmpeg support may be needed. Some unprotected M4A, MP4, or MOV imports on Mac may work without FFmpeg. Files protected to work only in particular software may not be importable through this route.

If the destination gives no bitrate guidance, Audacity’s manual recommends 128 kbps as a safe default for speech and 256 kbps for music. These are practical defaults, not universal standards or a guarantee that a higher bitrate improves the source.

Export the file, then play the MP3. Check that it opens, has the expected duration, and contains the tags you need.

For a Mac-specific route using Apple Music or GarageBand, use Apple’s M4A-to-MP3 instructions. The documented apps are the useful guide; exact clicks can differ with app versions. Do not assume that a protected subscription-stream file can be converted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose settings for the destination, not just the extension
M4A is an extension/container convention commonly associated with AAC audio; the extension alone does not guarantee one codec or quality profile. Audacity describes M4A (AAC) as lossy and notes that AAC can provide slightly better quality than MP3 at the same file size. If the target player or service accepts M4A/AAC, keeping the original may avoid an unnecessary lossy conversion. Audacity also notes that Opus and M4A can outperform MP3 at the same file size when the destination accepts them. See Audacity’s supported-format notes.

- Check the destination first: use its specified format, bitrate, and other requirements if available.
- Consider source quality: re-encoding a lossy M4A as MP3 cannot restore information lost when the source was encoded.
- Balance bitrate and file size: higher bitrates generally produce larger files, but they do not add detail absent from the original.
- Do not confuse AAC settings with MP3 settings: Audacity’s AAC export page lists a 44,100 Hz default sample rate and 256 kbps default quality for that AAC dialog. Those are not recommended MP3 settings. The same page lists 320 kbps as the maximum stereo AAC setting.
Check tags and artwork after conversion
Metadata such as title, artist, album, and track number is separate from the audio encoding. Audacity has a metadata editor for adding, deleting, or changing embedded information, but its documentation does not guarantee that every converter preserves all tags, chapters, or cover images. Inspect the exported MP3 in the player or app where you intend to use it. Audacity’s file-opening and saving FAQ describes its metadata and format support.

When conversion does not work
- Audacity cannot import the M4A: check whether FFmpeg support is needed for your platform and installation. The Audacity importing guide explains supported import routes.
- The file is protected: Audacity says some files restricted to particular software may not be importable through FFmpeg. Use only unprotected files you are authorized to convert; this method does not bypass DRM.
- The MP3 is rejected or too large: check the recipient’s exact format and bitrate requirements, then export a new copy using those values.
- Tags or artwork are missing: inspect the result and add or correct metadata in an editor that supports the information you need.
