Check the exact headset model before attempting a battery repair. Meta Quest 2 has a documented internal replacement procedure, but Meta’s Quest 3 safety guidance says its battery is not user-replaceable or serviceable. A short runtime alone does not prove the battery is degraded: first check charging, sleep behavior, and power settings. If the headset is damaged, swollen, leaking, smoking, or abnormally warm, stop using and charging it.
Can you replace a VR headset battery?
There is no universal answer. Battery access and service guidance differ by model, so identify the headset model and revision, then consult its current manufacturer manual or support channel. Do not apply a Quest 2 procedure to Quest 3, Quest 3S, or another brand.

Is the battery degraded, or is the headset using power while idle?
Fast battery drain can have causes other than an aging cell. Meta says disabling the proximity sensor prevents the headset from entering sleep and reduces battery life. Check that the headset sleeps when you take it off and is powered down when appropriate. Meta’s headset-management documentation explains the proximity sensor’s effect.

An older Meta Community Forums support reply suggested charging for two hours and trying another cable or charger if possible. Treat that as historical basic troubleshooting, not current manufacturer policy or a battery-health test. Read the older community thread.
If charge still drops unusually quickly after these checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for the exact model. The sources here do not establish a universal battery-health test or a numeric degradation threshold.

What to know before a Quest 2 battery replacement
The iFixit guide shows why this is not a quick battery swap: reaching the cell requires removing the facial interface and straps and disassembling the headset around the screen and lens assembly. It calls for a long PH00 driver to reach recessed screws and requires transferring the face-sensor interconnect cable to the replacement battery. The guide also says to calibrate the battery after installation and recycle electronic waste through an R2- or e-Stewards-certified recycler.

These steps describe the guide’s procedure; they do not mean the repair is authorized by Meta, risk-free, covered by warranty, or that replacement parts are currently available. If you lack the tools or repair experience, seek model-specific service rather than improvising.

Why Quest 3 battery repair is different
Meta’s Quest 3 Safety and Warranty Guide states: “The rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery in your headset is not user replaceable or serviceable.” It warns users not to open or attempt to repair or replace the battery. Follow that model-specific safety instruction rather than the Quest 2 repair guide. Meta’s safety material is available through its Quest Safety Center.
Stop using a damaged or unusually warm headset
Do not charge or use a headset that is damaged or abnormally warm, or whose battery is swollen, leaking liquid, or smoking. Do not open it to inspect the battery. Disconnect power if it is safe to do so, keep away from the device, and contact the manufacturer or authorized service provider for guidance. If it is smoking or presents an immediate fire risk, move away and contact local emergency services.

How long should a Quest battery last?
Meta’s device comparison, updated September 3, 2026, lists approximate battery life of about two hours for Quest 3 and about two and a half hours for Quest 3S. These are model-level estimates, not guaranteed session times or a battery-health diagnostic for an individual headset; actual runtime can vary with use and settings. See Meta’s device comparison.

Can an external battery extend play time?
A compatible USB-C power bank or battery-powered strap may extend a session, but it does not replace the headset’s internal battery or repair a degraded cell. Confirm model compatibility and follow the manufacturer’s charging guidance before using an accessory. No specific accessory or approval is established here.
