To enable location for a VR companion app, turn on your phone’s system Location Services, then allow access for that app if it appears in the phone’s location settings. If you mean an app running inside a Meta Quest headset, that is a separate permission controlled by the headset; the phone’s app permission does not grant it.
Enable location for a VR companion app on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Turn on Location Services if it is off.
- Find and tap the VR companion app, then choose an access option that is available for it.
The options shown depend on what the app requests and what iOS or iPadOS offers. Apple says an app must ask for permission before it can use Location Services, and you can change its location preference later in the same settings area. When system Location Services are off, apps cannot use location through that service in the foreground or background. See Apple’s explanation of privacy and Location Services.
If the app is not listed
Apple’s permission flow starts when an app requests access. If the companion app has not asked, there may be no app-specific location setting to change yet. The available guidance does not establish a fix for an app that never prompts; consult the app’s support information if its location-dependent feature remains unavailable.
Phone permission and headset permission are separate
Allowing location for a companion app on your phone does not authorize an app running in the headset. The phone operating system controls the companion app’s permission; a Quest app must request its own location access from the headset runtime. Meta’s Location API documentation describes that separate request for Quest apps.

What Meta Quest location access supports
Meta’s current developer documentation lists Quest 2, Quest Pro, and Quest 3 for its VR Location API, with OS v57 or later required. The API uses Wi-Fi geolocation because Quest headsets do not have GPS. Meta documents foreground location access only; it does not support background location access for this API. These are developer-documented platform requirements, not a consumer walkthrough of headset settings.
Meta announced on October 26, 2023, that Quest 2, Quest Pro, and Quest 3 supported Android Location Manager API starting with OS v57. The announcement is available in Meta’s developer post. The separate spatial data permission documentation, updated April 14, 2026, covers Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S, but that does not establish that Quest 3S supports the Location API.

Location is not the same as spatial-data permission
Meta documents spatial-data permission separately for access to Scene Model or Depth data. That permission concerns spatial information used by headset apps; it is not a substitute for location access. The devices listed for spatial-data permission do not determine which headsets support the separate Location API.

Check which device is requesting access and what feature needs it. On iPhone or iPad, review the app-specific options presented by the operating system; on Quest, the app must request its own access. Grant only the scope needed for the feature you intend to use. Meta specifically instructs developers to request the minimum location permission their app needs.

Quest settings guidance and its limits
The official Meta developer material establishes the Quest Location API behavior and requirements, but it does not provide current consumer menu steps for enabling headset Location Services. A Meta community forum reply describes a device-wide location setting before granting access to an individual app, but it is not a verified current support walkthrough. For the exact menu path on your headset software version, use current official Meta user support rather than relying on an unverified route.
These steps cover iPhone and iPad companion apps and Meta Quest headset apps. They do not establish Android phone menu instructions or a universal permission flow for other VR platforms.
