To get custom heads in Minecraft, first check your edition: Java Edition can give player heads and decorative textures with commands, while the Bedrock method covered here requires creating a custom add-on block. Java commands need cheats or suitable multiplayer permissions, and commands copied from older guides may not work in current versions.
Choose the method that matches your edition and head

Before you use a command
In Java singleplayer, commands must be enabled when creating the world or later through World Options. In Bedrock singleplayer, turn on Allow Cheats in the world’s Game settings. Mojang notes that enabling cheats disables achievements in that Bedrock world, even if cheats are later turned off. On a multiplayer server, you need sufficient permissions; ask the operator if it is someone else’s server. See Mojang’s command guide for command and permission context.
Get a player’s head in Java Edition
A player head uses a player’s skin. Older guides commonly show a command like /give @p minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:PlayerNameHere}, but that brace-form item syntax is legacy. Java Edition 1.20.5 changed item commands to use bracketed components and removed the prior brace-form NBT syntax. Use a command generated for your installed version, or verify its syntax before running it; do not assume an old tutorial’s command will work unchanged. - Open a community head database such as Minecraft-Heads and browse its categories.
- Preview the designs and choose the texture you want. A decorative texture can be used without choosing a real player’s name.
- Copy the generated
/givecommand for the stated Java version and paste it into a world where you have permission to run commands. - If the command fails, check the entry’s supported version and compare its syntax with the version of Java Edition you are playing.
The database is a third-party discovery and command-generation tool, not an official Minecraft feature. Its entries and generated command formats may not all work on every game version. The 1.21.6 release notes also describe changes to player-head profile rendering, another reason to prefer commands that explicitly target your version over old copied examples: Java 1.21.6 release notes.

What to do in Bedrock Edition
Do not paste a Java player_head texture command into Bedrock. The Java command workflow and item data described by head databases are not interchangeable with Bedrock. The community tutorial cited here documents creating a custom head block in an add-on using block and item definitions and related pack content; it is an advanced creator workflow, not a simple survival or chat-command method. Its stated target is format version 1.26.50, so check compatibility with your current Bedrock version before building from it: Bedrock Wiki custom heads tutorial.
The tutorial documents a multiplayer limitation: its N-way rotation may appear only to the host, not remote players. If you are authoring an add-on for multiplayer, account for that behavior and verify it in your target setup.

Troubleshoot a custom-head command
- “Unknown command” or no permission: confirm commands are enabled in singleplayer or that you have operator-level permission on the server.
- Syntax error near braces: the command may use the pre-1.20.5 item syntax. Get a version-aware command rather than trying to paste the old form unchanged.
- The command runs but the head is wrong or has no expected texture: check that the entry is intended for Java, and that its generated syntax supports your installed version.
- You are playing Bedrock: use a Bedrock add-on workflow rather than Java head-database commands.
