To use an existing Ring Video Doorbell on another phone, invite that person as a Shared User in the Ring app. They accept the invitation and sign in with their own Ring account; you do not need another doorbell or to share your password.

Before you begin

  • The doorbell must already be set up in the Ring app, and the home needs Wi-Fi, a mobile device, and the Ring app. Ring’s Shared Users and Alexa help page describes sharing as access to existing Ring devices and features.
  • Have the other person use a separate Ring account. If they do not already have one, they can create one when prompted.
  • Know which location and doorbell to share. Access is assigned to selected locations and devices, so check both before sending the invitation.

Invite another person from the doorbell

  1. Open the Ring app and open the menu.
  2. Tap Devices, then select the Video Doorbell.
  3. Tap Shared Access and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Enter the invitee’s email address and send the invitation.
  5. Ask the invitee to open Ring’s email, accept the invitation, and sign in to the Ring account they intend to use for access.

Ring also documents an invitation flow through User Permissions. App labels and availability can differ by account, app version, rollout, and geography, so use the flow and labels that appear in your app.

Alternatively, use User Permissions

  1. Open the app menu and choose Settings or Control Center, depending on what appears.
  2. Open User Permissions and tap Invite User.
  3. Choose the relevant category, such as family, friend, or employee, then enter the person’s name and email.
  4. Select the correct location and Video Doorbell. If the app offers permission levels, choose the appropriate one.
  5. Review the access selection and send the invitation. The invitee then accepts it from Ring’s email and signs in or creates an account.

What the second phone can access

Shared Users can use Live View, start Two-Way Talk, view Event History, and view recorded videos in the Ring app when the account has the required subscription. They can turn alerts on or off for their own phone, tablet, or PC.

Shared access is not the same as owner access. Ring says Shared Users cannot delete recent videos, add other Shared Users, delete devices, or change motion settings or the device name. They also cannot use Alexa to answer doorbell presses or receive doorbell or motion announcements.

Notifications on multiple phones

Each Shared User manages alerts for their own device. The invitee should check the Ring app’s notification settings on their phone and turn on the alerts they want; do not assume the owner’s notification choices automatically set alerts for everyone else.

Subscription: sharing versus recordings

Adding a Shared User does not require a Ring subscription. Viewing saved doorbell videos does require one, according to Ring’s Shared Users and Alexa support information. Live View and Two-Way Talk are separate from access to stored recordings.

If the invitee cannot see the doorbell

  • Check the invitation’s access selection. Confirm it includes the intended location and the specific Video Doorbell.
  • Check the account. The invitee should accept the invitation and sign in using the same Ring account that accepted it.
  • Allow time for access to appear. Ring says shared access may take up to 15 minutes after acceptance; this is guidance on its help page, not a guaranteed service time.
  • Check the invitation status. If it is missing or expired, review its status in the app and send a new invitation. Ring says invitations are valid for 14 days.
  • Try the other app route. If the labels do not match the instructions, look for either Shared Access on the doorbell or User Permissions in Settings or Control Center.
