A smart TV that keeps disconnecting usually has a weak Wi-Fi signal, a router or internet-service problem, a mismatch between the TV’s supported Wi-Fi band and the network, or a TV-side software issue. First check whether other devices lose internet too, then use the TV’s network status and a phone hotspot to narrow down the cause. The right fix depends on whether the failure is in the TV, the home network, or just one streaming app.
First determine what is actually disconnecting
Check whether the TV has lost Wi-Fi or only an app has stopped
Open the TV’s network status screen and check whether it reports a connection to the router and internet. Then try another streaming app or an internet-connected TV feature. If the TV still reports a connection and other apps work, the issue may be limited to the first app; update it if an update is available or contact that app’s provider. If the TV itself shows that it is offline, continue with the network checks below.
Compare with another device
Use a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi network. If several devices lose internet, the router or internet service is more likely at fault than the TV. If other devices stay online while the TV disconnects, focus on the TV’s network settings, Wi-Fi signal, supported band, and software.

Restart the modem and router, then check whether devices reconnect and remain online. A broader outage or a router fault can interrupt the internet even when the TV is working normally. If the problem continues across devices after a restart, check with your internet provider for an outage or service issue before buying new equipment.

If only the TV is disconnecting
Confirm the saved network and password
In the TV’s network settings, verify that it is connected to the intended Wi-Fi name (SSID). If you recently changed the network name or password, reconnect using the current details. Menu labels vary by manufacturer, model, and software version.
Check Wi-Fi band compatibility
Routers may broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, but a TV may not support every band. Check the specifications or support instructions for the exact TV model before changing router settings. For example, Samsung says certain 2018 TV models support only 2.4 GHz; that limitation does not apply to every Samsung TV. Google also notes that some Google TV devices require 5 GHz. Choose a network band the particular TV supports.

Restart the TV and install available updates
Restart the TV and check its settings for a system software update. Google TV Help includes restarting the device and installing available system updates among its troubleshooting steps. Exact menu paths depend on the model, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your TV.

Test the TV on a phone hotspot
Temporarily connect the TV to a phone’s hotspot, if your phone plan and TV allow it. This is an isolation test, not a recommended permanent connection. LG says that if the TV works on the hotspot, the TV is functioning and attention should turn to the router or internet service. If it also fails on the hotspot, a TV-side problem becomes more plausible; LG advises seeking support if the TV alone continues to fail.

Improve a weak or obstructed Wi-Fi connection
If the TV disconnects mainly because its signal is weak where it sits, try moving the router closer or reducing obstructions between the router and TV where practical. Check the TV’s network status after each change so you can tell whether the signal or connection is improving.
A Wi-Fi range extender may help reach a distant room, but it is not a guaranteed fix. LG cautions that an extender can also reduce speed or cause unstable connections. Compare it with repositioning the router or using a wired connection before choosing one.

Use Ethernet to test or bypass Wi-Fi
If both the TV and router have Ethernet ports, connect them with an Ethernet cable and check whether the TV stays online. A stable wired connection points toward a Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or compatibility problem; continued dropouts suggest looking beyond Wi-Fi. Ethernet can also serve as a lasting workaround when running a cable to the TV is practical.

Samsung’s network status test helps distinguish a problem between the TV and router from one between the router and the internet. If the TV cannot connect to the router, check the TV’s Wi-Fi settings, signal, and supported band. If the TV reaches the router but not the internet, investigate the router’s internet connection or contact your provider.

Google TV Help likewise recommends checking Wi-Fi status and the selected network, restarting the router, moving it closer, or using a cable. Its guidance is to try the next step when one does not work.
When to reset or request service
Do not start with a factory reset. Google warns that it erases device data, so first try the reversible checks: confirm the network, restart the TV and router, install available updates, and test another network or Ethernet where possible.
If the TV fails on a phone hotspot as well as the home network, or no Wi-Fi networks appear in its settings, consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model and firmware. LG recommends contacting support if no networks appear or the TV alone continues to fail. If the TV works on other networks but repeatedly fails only on your home Wi-Fi, continue investigating the router, coverage, and internet service rather than assuming the TV is defective.
