The best VPN depends on what you need it to do: NordVPN is a strong all-round choice for speed, Proton VPN is a good fit for speed-focused buyers who also value privacy, and Mullvad suits people who prioritize anonymous account setup over streaming convenience. Windscribe and ExpressVPN round out a shortlist for flexible pricing and easy setup. None is a universal winner: speed varies by route and device, audits have defined limits, and promotional prices do not establish renewal costs.
How these five VPNs were chosen
This shortlist weighs privacy evidence, dated speed tests, protocols, device limits, streaming and torrenting trade-offs, and ease of use. The cited comparisons use different methods, so their rankings should not be combined as if they were a single head-to-head test. Security.org says it tested more than 50 VPNs over nine months and ran 10 speed tests per VPN; those results describe its setup, not the speed every subscriber should expect. Security.org’s 2026 VPN comparison, RTINGS’ privacy comparison, and TechRadar’s VPN comparison provide useful, differing perspectives.
An independent audit can strengthen a privacy claim, but it is not proof of absolute anonymity. Before subscribing, check the provider’s current privacy policy and audit report, including what systems and time period the auditor actually assessed. The available comparisons do not establish a complete, harmonized audit scope or comparable renewal prices for all five services.

NordVPN: best all-round pick for speed
NordVPN is the most balanced pick here for buyers who want strong measured speeds and a broad feature set. Security.org’s January 2026 testing reported a 5.78% download slowdown and a 4.11% upload slowdown. Tom’s Guide measured an average 1,249 Mbps on a nearby East US route using NordLynx and 688 Mbps on an East US-to-UK route in March 2026. Those are tests under specified conditions, not a prediction for your connection; Tom’s Guide explicitly cautions that one test cannot predict an individual’s results. Read Tom’s Guide’s NordVPN test details.

Tom’s Guide also reports a no-logging audit in February 2026, alongside other audits. Treat that as evidence to inspect rather than a blanket guarantee: consult the current report for its scope and period. Security.org names NordVPN its overall VPN pick, making it a sensible starting point if you want one paid service rather than a specialist privacy setup. See Security.org’s comparison and methodology.
Proton VPN: best for speed with a privacy focus
Proton VPN combines competitive speed-test results with a strong privacy position. Security.org measured an 8.18% download slowdown and a 4.08% upload slowdown in January 2026, under its own testing conditions. TechRadar also highlights the service’s privacy positioning and network reach. Security.org’s test results and TechRadar’s comparison offer more context.

Do not treat every plan or privacy claim as equally established. RTINGS says Proton VPN Free allows unlimited usage but limits country selection and excludes torrenting; it also identifies limited scope in the free tier’s latest audit and ambiguity in policy language. That makes the free plan useful for trying basic VPN use, not a like-for-like substitute for a paid plan’s features or a reason to assume every privacy claim has been fully audited. RTINGS explains the free plan’s limits and audit caveats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMullvad: best for low-friction, privacy-focused account setup
Mullvad is a distinctive choice for people who want to avoid tying an account to an email address. It uses a generated account number and accepts cash or cryptocurrency. RTINGS describes it as a straightforward privacy-first option, but notes practical compromises: a maximum of five simultaneous connections, WireGuard-only support, no port forwarding, and streaming services that may identify and block its IP addresses. Choose it for the account model and privacy priorities, not as a streaming-unblocking solution. See RTINGS’ privacy comparison.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Windscribe: best for a flexible smaller plan
Windscribe supports WireGuard and OpenVPN. RTINGS reports a Build-a-Plan option at $3 per month with selected premium locations in its 2026 pricing snapshot; confirm current availability and terms before buying, since that figure is not a guaranteed renewal price. RTINGS also describes Windscribe as privacy-focused while noting that unlimited use at the same value requires an annual commitment. This is a useful option if you want to select locations and keep the plan narrower, but compare the current checkout terms with your usage needs. RTINGS’ comparison covers its plan and privacy positioning.
ExpressVPN: best for an especially simple app experience
TechRadar describes ExpressVPN as especially easy to use. Its comparison recorded a $2.99-per-month price snapshot for a two-year Basic plan, not a guaranteed current offer or renewal rate. Check the price and billing terms shown for your region at checkout. TechRadar’s testing also reports different Lightway results across platforms and discusses a Windows Lightway Turbo result, a reminder that protocol and device can change the outcome. Speed results are useful only with their test conditions
VPN speed is affected by the protocol, server route, device, base connection, and test method. A low percentage slowdown in one lab is encouraging, but it cannot guarantee a particular download rate at home or on a mobile network. The results below are useful as dated evidence, not as a universal leaderboard.
| Service | Reported result | Test context |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 5.78% download slowdown; 4.11% upload slowdown | Security.org test, January 2026. Source |
| Proton VPN | 8.18% download slowdown; 4.08% upload slowdown | Security.org test, January 2026. Source |
| NordVPN | 1,249 Mbps nearby average; 688 Mbps East US-to-UK average | Tom’s Guide, March 2026, using NordLynx; nearby East US route for the first figure. Results are not a prediction for every user. Source |
The percentage slowdowns and Mbps averages come from different testing approaches, so they should not be compared as if they measured the same thing. Use them to understand that a provider performed well under a stated setup, then try the service on your own devices and routes within any applicable refund period.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
How to choose, check privacy, and avoid price surprises
- Start with your main use. For broad everyday use and strong cited speed results, consider NordVPN. For privacy-oriented account setup, consider Mullvad. For a simple app experience, consider ExpressVPN. If you mainly want to test VPN basics without paying, Proton VPN Free is an option with meaningful limitations.
- Read the policy and audit, not just the slogan. Look for the systems examined, audit date, and what the auditor did and did not verify. A no-logs claim does not make you anonymous to every website, prevent tracking through signed-in accounts, or protect against malware and phishing.
- Check the protocol and device fit. Confirm that the service supports your operating systems and preferred protocol. Mullvad’s WireGuard-only support and five-connection cap may not suit every household or setup.
- Check current local billing terms. Compare the full upfront charge, subscription length, renewal rate, and cancellation terms in your country. The cited price figures are snapshots, not a comparable set of verified renewal prices.
- Try the routes and apps you actually use. Test a nearby server and a distant one on your own network. Streaming services can block VPN addresses, so no provider can guarantee access to a particular catalog.
Do you need a VPN all the time?
No. The right choice depends on your risk profile and what you are doing. Modern browsers, websites, and devices include built-in protections, while a VPN mainly changes the network path and the IP address visible to sites. It does not stop all forms of tracking or replace device security. If you need a VPN only on public Wi-Fi or for a particular work or travel situation, you may not need to keep it enabled constantly. RTINGS discusses when a VPN may be useful.
