A Windows file name is the name of one file or folder within a path. A backslash separates path components, so a file’s name is not the same thing as its full path. In ordinary Windows and Win32 use, names must avoid certain characters and reserved device names, and their length is subject to separate component and path limits. Exact behavior can vary by filesystem, namespace, API, and application.
What counts as a Windows file name?
A file name identifies a single file or directory at one level of a path. For example, in C:Reportsannual.txt, annual.txt is the file-name component; C:Reportsannual.txt is the full path. The backslashes divide the path into components.
Microsoft’s naming guidance describes common Win32 rules, but it also notes that the filesystem can impose its own rules. A name accepted by one storage system or interface is not necessarily handled identically by every Windows application.

For ordinary Win32 names, avoid these reserved characters: <, >, :, ", /, , |, ?, and *. NUL and control characters numbered 1 through 31 are also disallowed, with an exception for alternate data streams.

report:final.txtuses a reserved colon;report-final.txtis a practical alternative.- A slash or backslash is used to separate path components rather than as ordinary punctuation inside a component.
These are common Windows/Win32 conventions, not a promise that every filesystem or API has identical constraints.
Why are names such as CON and NUL reserved?
Windows reserves certain names for device identifiers. The list includes CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1 through COM9, and LPT1 through LPT9. Variants of COM and LPT using superscript digits ¹, ², and ³ are reserved too.

Adding an extension does not make one of these names ordinary. For example, NUL.txt and NUL.tar.gz are still treated as the reserved device name. Microsoft documents special handling for names that ordinary interfaces cannot access normally in its guidance on removing files with reserved names.

Can a file name start or end with a space or period?
A leading period is allowed, as in .settings. Microsoft advises against ending a file or directory name with an ASCII space or period: its naming guidance says, “Do not end a file or directory name with a space or a period.” Microsoft Support explains that leading or trailing ASCII spaces and trailing ASCII periods are stripped upon creation, so the stored name may differ from what was entered.

Other whitespace is a separate edge case. It can be retained at the beginning or end of a name. Win32 can enumerate files regardless of whitespace placement, but WinRT enumeration has limitations for trailing non-ASCII whitespace on local or remote filesystems, according to Microsoft Support.
How long can a Windows file name or path be?
A filename component and a full path have different length limits. The Microsoft file-system protocol specification says a filename must contain at least one character and no more than 255 characters. That is a component limit in the specification, not a limit for the entire path; see [MS-FSCC] File System Control Codes.

The traditional Windows API value MAX_PATH is 260 characters. It is an API limitation, not a universal maximum for every Windows path. Microsoft documents long-path behavior for Windows 10 version 1607 and later, but using longer paths depends on the relevant Windows configuration, API support, and path form. Consequently, enabling long-path support does not mean every application can open every long path. See Microsoft’s maximum file path limitation documentation.

Are Windows file names case-sensitive?
Do not assume that names differing only by letter case identify separate files in typical Windows use. NTFS supports POSIX case-sensitive semantics, but that is not the default behavior. Case handling can depend on filesystem and configuration, so applications should not rely on case sensitivity unless their specific environment establishes it. Microsoft’s naming guidance cautions against assuming names are case-sensitive.

Practical naming checklist
- Use ordinary letters, numbers, spaces within the name, hyphens, or underscores rather than reserved punctuation.
- Do not use a reserved device name as the base name, even if you append an extension.
- Avoid ending a name with an ASCII space or period; a leading period is permitted.
- Check the component length separately from the total path length.
- If a name behaves differently across applications, consider the filesystem, namespace, API, and Windows configuration rather than assuming one universal rule.
