What is a thin client? It is a computer or software endpoint that relies on remote resources for much of its processing and application environment. The endpoint handles input, display, and network communication; a server, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), or cloud service supplies much of the desktop, applications, or data. The device may still do some work locally: “thin” describes where most computing happens, not an absence of local computing.

How thin-client computing works

A hardware thin client starts up and connects over a network to a centralized computing environment. Keyboard and mouse actions travel to that environment, where applications run and work is processed; the endpoint receives the resulting screen updates. The remote environment might provide a complete desktop or only selected applications.

In VDI, the operating system, applications, and user environment are hosted centrally and delivered as a virtual desktop. Shared terminal services can instead let several users access server-hosted applications without each receiving a separate full desktop. Browser-based services are another form of remote access, although the local browser and device may still perform some processing.

Bitkom’s vendor-neutral procurement guide describes the underlying principle as shifting a computer’s main tasks to remote computer-centre, web, or cloud resources. That can make endpoint administration and resource sharing more centralized; it does not remove the need to run and manage the remote service.

Forms of thin clients

  • Purpose-built hardware: A compact endpoint with comparatively limited local resources and connections for displays and peripherals.
  • Software-defined endpoint: A general-purpose PC or notebook configured to access remote desktops or applications.
  • Browser-based access: An ordinary device connects through a browser to web applications or services, with some work potentially handled locally.
  • Shared terminal services: Users access selected applications hosted on a shared remote system.
  • VDI: A centrally hosted operating system, applications, and data environment is delivered as a virtual desktop. AWS identifies VDI as a leading thin-client use case.

Where organizations use thin clients

Thin-client deployments are used for call centers, kiosks shared by temporary users, remote workers and contractors, and access to virtualized legacy applications. These settings can benefit from consistent centrally managed desktops or from limiting the amount of business data kept on individual endpoints. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the service, workload, network, peripherals, and support arrangements.

Thin client versus a regular PC or rich client

A thin client shifts more of the computing environment away from the desk. A conventional PC or rich client keeps more processing, storage, and application capability locally. Microsoft’s Smart Client guide describes rich interfaces, offline use, and access to local hardware and software as capabilities of a richer client approach.

Where work runs Much of the processing and application environment runs remotely. More processing and application work runs on the local device.
Local resources Often needs less endpoint hardware, depending on the workload and design. Needs enough local compute and storage for its applications and data.
Offline work Often limited when the required desktop or apps depend on a remote connection. Can support offline use when applications and required files are available locally.
Network dependence Depends on network access and remote-service availability; AWS notes that low latency benefits thin-client performance. Can keep working on local tasks without a continuous connection, depending on the application.
Administration and data Centralized updates and less endpoint data can help with fleet administration and data control, but do not guarantee lower total cost or stronger security. More endpoint-specific software and data may need local management.
Peripherals and local software Support depends on the endpoint, remote platform, and configuration. Local applications can more directly use supported local hardware and software.

How to decide whether thin-client computing fits

Evaluate the whole service rather than comparing endpoint purchase prices alone. The server or cloud capacity, network, administration, access controls, and user-support needs are part of the system.

  1. Map the workload. Identify which applications users need and whether they require substantial local processing, storage, or specialized software.
  2. Check offline requirements. If users must continue work during a network or remote-service outage, establish how that work will be handled before choosing a connection-dependent setup.
  3. Assess network quality at the work location. Test reliability and latency for the actual applications; a connection that is adequate for basic browsing may not feel responsive for every remote desktop workload.
  4. List displays and peripherals. Confirm that the endpoint and remote platform support required monitors, USB devices, printers, audio equipment, and other accessories.
  5. Include central operating costs and controls. Account for remote compute capacity, licensing or service arrangements, network, administration, backups, and access security. Reduced local data can help control exposure, but does not by itself make a deployment secure.
  6. Check expected support life. Confirm operating-system and security-update coverage for the specific endpoint and its remote platform. Bitkom’s 2020 procurement guide described approximately 5–7 years as a typical useful operating life for hardware-defined thin clients; that is dated guidance, not a guarantee for a current model.

A platform-specific example: Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client

Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client is a physical endpoint designed to access AWS End User Computing virtual desktops, not a platform-neutral thin client. AWS documentation says it supports two monitors and multiple USB devices, and does not permit local data storage or installation of unapproved applications. AWS states that support for the device will end on March 31, 2027; after that date it can no longer be used or managed through the console. The end date makes platform and lifecycle checks essential before considering this particular device.

AWS director of product for End User Computing Melissa Stein said customers wanted a lower-cost device, particularly for high-turnover environments such as call centers or payment processing. That describes the product’s design motivation; it is not independent evidence that thin clients always cost less.
