To put a name tag on a dog in Minecraft, first rename the tag in an anvil, then hold the renamed tag and use it on the dog. The tag is consumed when it names the mob.
What you need
- A name tag
- An anvil
In Survival mode, Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 let you craft a name tag from one paper and any metal nugget. The recipe was added in the Tiny Takeover update, released for both editions on March 24, 2026. See the Java 26.1 release notes, Bedrock 26.10 release notes, and Tiny Takeover update details. In Creative mode, take a name tag from the inventory instead.
How to put the name tag on your dog
- Open an anvil. Place the name tag in its input slot.
- Type the dog’s name. Enter the chosen name in the anvil’s name field.
- Take the renamed tag. Move it from the output slot into your inventory.
- Use it on the dog. Hold the renamed tag and interact with the dog. The exact control depends on your platform and control settings; use the action for interacting with a mob.
Minecraft’s name-tag guide describes renaming a tag before using it on a mob. Its Tiny Takeover challenge article puts the sequence simply: “Rename the name tag with an anvil and then use it on your baby mob of choice.”

What happens to the tag afterward?
The name tag is consumed when applied to a mob. The dog’s displayed name changes to the name you entered on the tag.
