If a customer needs your current hours, a way to contact you, or a form to request service, your website has to work when they need it. That depends on more than its homepage: the domain, hosting, software, account access, customer data, backups, and accessibility all need ongoing ownership.
What does a small-business website need besides a homepage?
A useful way to plan a website is to treat it as an operating service, not a one-time design project. Customers rely on it to find information and take action; the business must keep the systems behind those tasks available and maintained.
- Domain and hosting: The domain is the address customers use; hosting provides the infrastructure that serves the site. Know which accounts control each and how to reach the provider if the site is unavailable.
- Site software and updates: A content management system, themes, plugins, or other components may need maintenance. Decide who checks for updates, applies them, and responds if an update breaks a feature.
- Account control: Identify who can change the site, hosting, domain, and connected services. Use individual access where available, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), and restrict access to what each person needs.
- Customer data: Know what information forms or other features collect, where it is stored, and who can access it. Ask the provider how it protects that data.
- Backups and recovery: Backups matter only if the business can use them to restore the site or its data. Plan how to recover, and test that the process works.
- Accessibility: Essential information and services should be usable by people with disabilities. Accessibility belongs in decisions about site design, changes, and ongoing checks.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises small businesses to clarify responsibilities for security and maintenance with their website host or developer. Its guidance is U.S.-focused and does not guarantee that a particular provider or site is secure. Read the FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance.
Who is responsible for website updates and backups?
The business owner remains responsible for knowing who is doing the work, even when a hosting company, developer, or managed service handles it. Put responsibilities in writing and make sure there is a named person who can reach each provider and authorize changes.

Updates and access
Agree on who monitors and applies software updates, who checks the site afterward, and who can make routine edits. Use MFA for accounts that access business systems, and limit access to sensitive settings and information. When a staff member or contractor no longer needs access, remove it.
Backups and recovery
Ask what is backed up, how often, where copies are kept, and who can restore them. The FTC recommends keeping backups disconnected from the network so they can remain useful after an attack. Establish who will contact the host, what information they need, and how the business will handle customer-facing tasks during an outage. Do not assume that having a backup means recovery has been tested.

Incident response
Know how to report a suspected compromise to your provider and what support it offers during an incident. The FTC recommends planning for response and recovery as well as routine protections. Its page describes the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 as “free, voluntary, and flexible.” NIST’s Small Business Quick Start Guide is intended to help smaller organizations with modest or no cybersecurity plans begin managing risk; it is not a website certification.
What should I ask a web hosting company?
Ask questions that expose the division of work, the protections in place, and what happens when something goes wrong. The FTC recommends clarifying these issues before choosing or relying on a host.

Compare providers by their answers and the clarity of their responsibilities, not by a security label alone. If a developer or managed service is involved, ask the same questions about that arrangement and ensure the business retains access to the accounts it needs.
How do I make my business website accessible?
In U.S. guidance, the Department of Justice (DOJ) says businesses must ensure that the programs, services, and goods they provide to the public—including online—are accessible to people with disabilities. Its March 18, 2022 guidance says: “Businesses and state and local governments should consider a variety of website features when ensuring that their websites are accessible to people with disabilities.” The guidance describes itself as informal and not legally binding; it does not set a universal deadline or a specific conformance level. Read the DOJ’s Guidance on Web Accessibility and the ADA.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The DOJ points to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508 as helpful technical references. It recommends pairing automated accessibility checkers with manual checks. In practice, check whether common customer tasks—finding hours, contacting the business, or submitting a request—can be completed using the site, and review the experience rather than relying on an automated score alone.
