If your AirPods Pro sound muffled, thin, uneven, crackly, or keep cutting out, the cause may be a blocked mesh, a poor ear-tip seal, a listening-mode setting, a Bluetooth connection, or a software or hardware issue. These are useful troubleshooting categories, not five confirmed defects in every pair. Start with the checks that match your symptom before paying for service or buying anything.
Match the symptom to the likely cause

These clues help prioritize checks; they do not identify a fault on their own.
1. Debris is blocking a speaker or microphone mesh
Earwax or other debris can obstruct the sound path or microphones. Apple recommends checking for debris when bass is reduced or background sound increases while Active Noise Cancellation is on. Inspect the meshes in good light, then use Apple’s cleaning instructions for AirPods Pro that match your generation.
Do not run AirPods Pro under water, poke the mesh with a pin, scrape it, or apply generic cleaning liquids. Apple’s specific mesh-cleaning procedure applies to AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3; it calls for specified supplies and at least two hours of drying before use or charging. Pro 3 has an additional procedure, so do not apply it to earlier models. For AirPods Pro 1, follow the instructions relevant to that model rather than the Pro 2/3 mesh procedure. Apple lists a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit as one possible supply option for Pro 2 and Pro 3 cleaning, but a kit is not a substitute for following the model-specific directions.

2. The ear tip is not sealing your ear
A poor seal can reduce bass and make noise cancellation less effective. Apple’s guidance is straightforward: “Your AirPods ear tips should make a good seal with your ear canal for the best sound quality and noise cancellation.” Try the included tip sizes and run the fit or seal test supported by your model. One ear may need a different size from the other.
- On your connected device, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the Info button beside your AirPods.
- Choose Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro 1 or Pro 2, or Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3, when the option is supported by your device and operating system.
- Adjust how the AirPods sit or try another included size, then repeat the test.
If an included tip is missing, worn, or none fits comfortably, replacement tips are an option. Confirm that replacement tips are designed for your exact AirPods Pro generation; tips are model-specific.

3. A listening mode is changing the sound you hear
Noise-control and adaptive features can change the balance between media and environmental sound. Adaptive Audio adjusts noise-control settings to the surroundings on supported models. Conversation Awareness can lower media volume when you speak and enhance nearby voices on supported models. Availability depends on AirPods generation and operating system.

To compare sound consistently, play the same track at the same volume while temporarily using a fixed listening mode. Turn off features that adapt to speech or surroundings for the comparison. If the sound changes, that points to the listening experience or settings—not proof that the earbuds are physically damaged. 4. Bluetooth interference or the audio source is causing dropouts
Stutters and cutouts that vary by place or source fit a connection problem better than consistently weak bass in both earbuds. Apple recommends keeping the source device within a couple of metres while troubleshooting and comparing streamed audio with audio stored on the device.
- Stored audio is stable but streaming cuts out: Keep the device nearby and try another location. Walls, floors, crowds, heavy Wi-Fi activity, poorly shielded cables, microwave ovens, and wireless speakers can interfere with Bluetooth signals.
- Both stored and streamed audio cut out: Test with the device nearby in another location. If the problem persists, unpair and pair the AirPods again.
Follow Apple’s Bluetooth guidance for cutouts or distortion if the connection remains unreliable.

5. Software, firmware, or a persistent hardware issue remains
Make sure the connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac has current software, and check the AirPods firmware version using Apple’s current instructions. Firmware versions change and differ by generation, so a version number that was current at one point may become stale. Apple says firmware updates are delivered automatically when the AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device. Its update procedure says to leave them in the closed case for at least 30 minutes, then check the version.

Reset steps differ between AirPods Pro 1/2 and Pro 3; use Apple’s reset instructions for your AirPods generation rather than assuming one button sequence fits all models. Seek Apple or authorized service if crackling or static continues across audio sources or devices, or if one side remains quieter after safe cleaning and connection checks. Do not attempt an invasive repair. Apple’s service-program page describes a historical program for eligible affected units manufactured before October 2020, with coverage stated as three years after first retail sale and information dated 2021-10-01.
