A USB peripheral port is the connection point on a device that connects toward a computer or hub. In USB’s more precise role terminology, it is typically an upstream-facing port; the host or hub connects to it through a downstream-facing port. The phrase describes a connection role—not a specific connector shape, speed, or charging capability.
What does “USB peripheral port” mean?
A port is a connection point. NIST’s general glossary defines a port as “the entry or exit point from a computer for connecting communications or peripheral devices.” In the phrase “USB peripheral port,” peripheral describes the device’s role in the connection: it is attached to a host, such as a computer, or through a hub.
“USB peripheral port” is useful descriptive wording, but it does not by itself specify a connector or a formal capability. USB-IF’s OTG and Embedded Host supplement defines an upstream port as “A port used to connect to a host or a hub.” That is the more precise term for the peripheral-side connection in a typical host-to-peripheral setup.
How does it relate to a host or hub port?
In a typical connection, the host or hub provides the downstream-facing port, and the attached peripheral provides the upstream-facing port. USB-IF describes a standard USB 2.0 downstream port as a port on a host or hub under the USB 2.0 specification.

A hub sits between the host and peripheral, with upstream and downstream connections. USB On-The-Go (OTG) devices are a qualification: the OTG supplement says an OTG device’s port can operate as upstream or downstream, depending on its role.
Does the term tell you the connector, speed, or power?
No. The role of a port is separate from its connector type, data rate, and power features. The phrase alone does not establish whether a port uses USB-A, USB-B, Micro-USB, or USB-C, nor does a connector’s appearance prove its role or capabilities. Check the device documentation and applicable USB specification for those details.

Power figures depend on the specific port and device case. USB-IF compliance guidance gives these examples for standard downstream ports:
- A peripheral on a standard USB 2.0 downstream port: 500 mA.
- A USB 3.0 peripheral on a standard USB 3.0 downstream port: 900 mA.
- A USB 2.0 peripheral on a standard USB 3.0 downstream port: 500 mA.
These figures apply to the stated standard-port cases; they are not universal charging limits and do not describe every USB charging mode or USB Power Delivery negotiation.

Is a USB peripheral port the same as a USB device?
No. A port is a connection point; a device is the equipment connected through it. USB-IF’s class-code reference describes device functions such as human interface devices (HID), printers, mass-storage devices, and hubs. Those classes describe functionality, not a universal port or connector definition.
