If your capture card’s picture is behind, first check where you’re watching it. A delay in OBS or another computer preview is not necessarily a delay on a TV or monitor connected to the card’s HDMI passthrough. For gameplay, use the passthrough display when your card and signal setup support it; use software delay controls only to sync audio and video.
Why is my capture card delayed?
“Capture card delay” can describe three different problems: lag in the computer’s software preview, delay on an HDMI passthrough display, or audio and video that are out of sync. These have different causes and fixes, so identify which one you mean before changing settings.
The computer preview is behind
Some cards compress video before sending it to the computer, which adds latency to the software preview. Elgato says the preview for its Game Capture HD is delayed by 2 to 3 seconds because of the model’s H.264 compression chip. For the Game Capture HD60, Elgato describes the software-preview delay as almost a second. These are manufacturer figures for those specific products, not measurements that apply to every capture card. Elgato’s Game Capture HD guidance and its HD60 guidance do not state publication dates.
The passthrough display is delayed
Passthrough is a separate route from the computer preview: the card sends the source’s HDMI signal onward to a TV or monitor while also capturing it for the computer. Elgato describes passthrough on its products as adding no delay to the connected display, but this does not establish that every card or setup behaves identically. Check your own model’s specifications and the source and display’s supported signal modes. Elgato’s capture-card explainer describes the general signal path.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Audio and video are out of sync
This is a synchronization issue, not necessarily gameplay lag. Determine whether the audio or video arrives first, then delay the source that is early. The right adjustment depends on your setup; there is no universal offset established by the available guidance.
How do I fix capture card lag while playing?
If you are playing from the OBS or capture-software preview, try playing from a separate display connected to the capture card’s HDMI Out instead. That lets you watch the passthrough signal while the computer handles capture. It is the practical workaround for preview latency when your card provides passthrough and your display supports the source signal.

- Connect the console or other video source to the capture card’s HDMI In.
- Connect the card’s HDMI Out to a TV or monitor.
- Play while watching that TV or monitor. Keep the computer preview for recording or streaming rather than as your gameplay screen.
If your card has no passthrough output, or the display cannot accept the source’s signal mode, this route may not work. Check the exact model’s input and passthrough resolution and refresh-rate support, host connection, software support, and compatibility with your console and display before changing hardware. The available sources do not establish a current cross-brand latency ranking.

Can I play through OBS without input delay?
OBS displays the captured video after it has passed through the card and the computer’s capture pipeline. The evidence here does not establish a setting that removes the card’s underlying preview latency. A passthrough display is the better choice for gameplay when available; OBS remains the view for checking or producing the captured feed.

What to check when there is no signal or the picture flickers
No signal and intermittent flicker are acquisition or compatibility problems, not general fixes for a delayed software preview. Check the signal path and supported modes before changing synchronization settings.
- Confirm the source is on and produces a picture when connected directly to a screen.
- Check the routing: source to capture card HDMI In, then capture card HDMI Out to the display.
- Check whether HDCP protection is enabled if the content is protected.
- Confirm that the display supports the source’s resolution and refresh rate. If the mode is unsupported or the signal flickers, check display capability and EDID negotiation.
Elgato’s guides cover no-signal troubleshooting and monitor or TV flicker and signal loss.

How to sync audio and video in capture software
Use source-delay controls only when the audio and video are misaligned. If video arrives first, delay the video; if audio arrives first, delay the audio. Elgato’s 4K60 S+ guide describes adding a Video Delay (Async) filter for video and adjusting an audio sync offset in supported applications. These controls align sources; they do not remove the capture card’s inherent preview latency. See Elgato’s application-specific delay instructions for the documented steps.
