A private Git repository can work well for notes if you want readable files, a change history, and a remote copy—and are willing to commit, push, and pull deliberately. It is not automatic syncing, live collaboration, or proof that a hosting provider cannot access your notes. Obsidian offers a well-documented example of this approach, but the same questions apply to any notes app that stores content as files.
What does it mean to keep notes in a private Git repository?
In Obsidian, a vault is a folder of Markdown files. Obsidian’s storage documentation explains that the files can also be managed with other text editors and file managers. Rather than keeping notes only inside a notebook service, you can use Git to track changes to those files and send commits to a remote repository hosted by a service or on your own server.
That gives you a folder of portable text files and a record of changes. It does not mean every feature in the notes app will work elsewhere: app-specific functions or formatting may not transfer perfectly. Before choosing a file-based workflow, check what your particular app stores as plain text and what depends on its own features.

How does the Git workflow move notes between devices?
In the documented Obsidian Git flow, you save edits, commit them, and push the commit to the remote repository. On another device, you pull the changes before continuing there. The cycle is deliberate: Git does not automatically keep devices continuously synchronized just because a remote repository exists.

- Edit: Make changes to notes in the local vault.
- Commit and push: Record the changes in Git and send the commit to the remote repository.
- Pull on the next device: Retrieve the remote changes before editing there, then commit and push that device’s changes when ready.
Obsidian’s sync guidance describes the Git-based approach and its device considerations. A plugin or other automation can reduce manual steps, but it changes when commits and pulls happen and how conflicts may surface. Treat automation as a separate workflow to configure and understand, not as a feature Git provides automatically.
What does a private repository protect—and what does it not?
“Private” describes repository visibility and access settings; by itself, it does not establish end-to-end encryption or prove that the hosting provider cannot access the files. A third-party host still holds an external copy. Its encryption, retention, jurisdiction, account recovery, and access policies depend on that provider and your configuration.

Check the current security terms and repository-access settings for whichever host you choose. The available Obsidian guidance does not establish the current privacy terms of any particular Git host, so do not treat a private-repository setting as a substitute for verifying them.
Git repo or managed notebook sync: which fits your routine?

Git is a better fit when readable files and inspectable change history are worth a more hands-on routine. Managed sync is a better fit when convenient multi-device updates matter more; check the service’s privacy, export, and recovery terms before relying on it.

What happens if you edit a note on two devices?
Git is not designed to share changes live. If separate edits arrive from different devices, you may need to reconcile them rather than expect them to appear instantly as they would in a live collaborative editor. Obsidian’s Obsidian Git plugin documentation warns that Git is not intended for live sharing; users push and pull changes.
Use a clear routine: pull before editing on a device, avoid simultaneous edits to the same note, and resolve any reported conflicts before carrying on. A Git workflow is version control, not real-time co-editing.

Is the remote repository also a backup?
A remote copy and Git history can help you recover notes, but synchronization and version control are not a complete backup plan. Obsidian Help puts it plainly: “Syncing keeps your notes updated, but it doesn’t protect against data loss.” Its backup guidance recommends using a proper backup system.

A remote repository alone may not protect against every kind of loss, such as losing access to the host account or a problem affecting the remote copy.

What should mobile users check first?
Device support depends on the platform and the chosen client. Obsidian’s Git setup guidance lists desktop systems and describes Working Copy as an iOS Git-client route. It also marks some alternative mobile sync methods as unsupported. Check the current instructions for your device and app version before building your routine around them.
Do not casually combine multiple sync engines on the same vault. Obsidian warns that doing so can lead to conflicts or corruption. If you use app settings or temporary files that differ by device, decide how to handle them; Obsidian’s guidance mentions excluding the .obsidian folder when users want separate settings.
