A powerline adapter can give a smart TV a wired network connection without running a long Ethernet cable across the house. It sends network data through compatible household electrical wiring, but results depend on the wiring and electrical conditions in your home. The reported $45 price and speed improvement in one account are historical, unverified claims—not a current price or a promise of what you’ll get.

How a powerline adapter connects a TV

A typical two-adapter kit creates an Ethernet connection between your router and a device in another room:

  1. Connect one adapter to the router with an Ethernet cable, then plug it into a wall outlet.
  2. Plug the second adapter into a wall outlet near the TV and connect it to the TV with another Ethernet cable.

The adapters carry network data over the home’s electrical wiring. You avoid routing a long Ethernet cable between rooms, but the adapters need compatible wiring on the same electrical system. For the documented AV1000 setup, TP-Link recommends using outlets on the same electrical circuit. See its AV1000 starter-kit documentation and check the manual for the exact model and region you buy.

What the $45 story actually establishes

In a September 9, 2025 BlogGoto article, Umesh Nagy describes using a TP-Link AV1000 kit to connect a TV in a distant three-season room, where Wi-Fi was unreliable and running Ethernet was impractical. Nagy says the kit cost $45 at the time; that figure is historical and does not establish today’s price or availability. The article excerpt does not identify a precise model number. • 𝐀𝐕𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐭 - Powered by HomePlug AV2, delivers AV1000 powerline speeds through existing electrical wiring. Speeds cannot exceed your internet plan's limit and may be lower due to wiring quality, distance, and interference.
  • Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
  • 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
  • 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.

Nagy reports Wi-Fi speeds of 10–50 Mbps in the room, up to 800 Mbps near an access point, a prior connection described as 5 Mbps, and 500+ Mbps after installing the adapters. These are the author’s observations, not independently verified measurements or typical results. They do not show that another home—or even another outlet pair in the same home—will achieve the same speed.

AV1000 is a link-rate class, not a speed guarantee

“AV1000” refers to a theoretical maximum physical-layer rate of up to 1,000 Mbps. It is not the throughput your TV should be expected to receive. TP-Link says actual speeds can be limited by the product’s Ethernet port and network traffic, electrical noise, wiring issues, and other conditions. Internet service and the rest of your home network also affect what the TV can receive. TP-Link’s AV1000 product page explains the distinction.

Set up the adapters to give them a fair trial

For its AV1000 product family, TP-Link advises plugging adapters directly into wall outlets rather than into a power strip, extension cord, or surge protector. It also cautions against placing them close to high-powered appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. These are manufacturer directions for the documented product family; follow the manual for your specific model.

  • Use at least two compatible powerline devices, connected to the same electrical wiring system.
  • Where possible, choose outlets on the same circuit, as TP-Link recommends for the AV1000 setup.
  • Plug each adapter directly into a wall outlet.
  • Keep adapters away from high-powered appliances when practical.
  • After setup, test the connection at the TV’s location and judge whether it resolves your actual streaming problem.

More adapters can be added to a TP-Link powerline network, but mixing speed tiers can affect performance. Product type also matters: TP-Link says TL-PA models provide Ethernet only, while TL-WPA models include Wi-Fi. The displayed powerline link rate is not the same as actual data-transfer speed. Choose an approach based on your home and TV

Option When it may fit What to check
Direct Ethernet You can run a cable neatly and safely from the router to the TV. Whether the route and cable length are practical.
Powerline A long cable run is inconvenient and the outlets may communicate well over compatible wiring. Test performance in your home; wiring and electrical noise can limit results.
Wi-Fi extender or mesh system The TV needs a wireless connection or you want to extend Wi-Fi coverage. Compare the total cost and setup effort, including any extra equipment needed. The evidence here does not establish that either option will outperform powerline in your home.

If the TV lacks an Ethernet port, a standard Ethernet-only powerline adapter cannot connect to it directly; check the TV’s ports and the adapter’s features before buying. A Wi-Fi-capable powerline model is a different option from an Ethernet-only model.

A practical way to decide

  1. If practical, test a direct Ethernet cable to the TV. This gives you a wired alternative without relying on the home’s electrical wiring.
  2. If a cable run is impractical, check whether the router-side and TV-side outlets are on compatible wiring; same-circuit outlets are TP-Link’s recommendation for the documented AV1000 setup.
  3. Check the exact adapter type and the TV’s connection options. Confirm whether you need Ethernet or Wi-Fi at the TV.
  4. After installation, test the connection at the TV’s location and try the streaming activity that was failing. Compare the actual result with what you need rather than relying on the AV1000 label.
  5. If the connection does not solve the problem, reposition the adapters where practical or return the equipment under the seller’s applicable policy; consider another connection approach instead.
