Before selling, giving away, or recycling a phone, remove its physical SIM card. If you still need the number, ask your carrier whether the SIM can move to your new phone. If you will not reuse the card, destroy it or store it somewhere safe. Then handle the phone separately: back up what you need, unlink accounts, factory-reset it, and use an appropriate local recycling route.
Decide whether you need the SIM or its phone number
A SIM is separate from the handset, so decide what to do with the card before you hand over the phone. If you are keeping the same number, you may be able to transfer the SIM to another phone. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this option, but whether it works depends on your carrier and device; confirm the transfer process and compatibility with your carrier. If you are ending the account or changing service, check with the carrier about transferring or closing the service before disposing of the card. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) also advises ensuring the account is terminated or transferred when disposing of a device. CISA: Disposing of Devices Safely
Remove the SIM without damaging the phone
- Consult the phone’s manual or manufacturer instructions to find the SIM tray or slot and learn how to open it.
- Remove the card carefully. Do not force the tray, and check whether a separate microSD card is present before removing or disposing of anything.
- Keep the SIM in a secure place while you confirm whether it is needed for a number transfer or account change.
If the phone uses eSIM only, there is no physical card to remove. Follow the device and carrier’s instructions to transfer or delete the eSIM profile; the exact steps depend on the service and phone.

Destroy an unused SIM or store it safely
If you will not reuse the physical SIM, the FTC says to destroy it. CISA offers two options: physically destroy it or store it in a safe place. Neither agency specifies a required household tool or destruction method, so there is no officially prescribed technique to follow. A cross-cut shredder is one possible practical tool, but buying one is not necessary to follow the guidance.
Do not assume a deactivated SIM has no information on it: the official guidance supports removing and disposing of the card, but does not establish what data remains on every card. For details about a particular SIM or account, ask your carrier.

Erase and recycle the phone separately
Removing the SIM does not wipe the phone, and a factory reset does not destroy a SIM that has been removed. Before handing over the handset, back up anything you need, remove any SD card, unlink relevant accounts or trusted-device access, and factory-reset the phone using the manufacturer’s instructions. The FTC’s January 2025 upgrade guidance and the Australian Cyber Security Centre both treat removable media and erasing the device as separate steps.

Use a municipal, retailer, carrier, or other suitable e-waste collection route for the handset, and check what that program accepts. Rules and collection options vary by location. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal recycling stream for detached SIM cards or a single household disposal rule for them. Check with your local waste authority if you want to recycle the card rather than destroy or securely store it.
