You can connect Claude to an existing SAP HANA database through a local MCP server, but “SAP HANA MCP server” refers to several different projects—not one standard product. This guide uses the community Node.js package hana-mcp-server with Claude Desktop. Its maintainers document an npx setup; “10 minutes” is a target, not a measured setup time. Database reachability, credentials, TLS settings, and client configuration can add time.

The walkthrough is for a local, read-oriented connection. Use a least-privilege HANA account, keep certificate validation enabled, and do not treat Claude’s ability to request a tool as permission for the database to run it.

How do I connect Claude to SAP HANA?

For this walkthrough, Claude Desktop starts hana-mcp-server locally over MCP’s standard input/output (stdio) transport. The server connects onward to your HANA database using the connection values you provide. The project is maintained by its repository contributors; it is not an SAP endorsement.

Before configuring Claude, confirm that the computer running Claude Desktop can reach your SAP HANA or SAP HANA Cloud database on its SQL port. You will also need database credentials and Node.js 18 or newer. The package README lists macOS, Linux, and Windows support. Its instructions and package releases can change, so check the hana-mcp-server repository if the configuration no longer matches your installed client.

Choose an account and connection details

  • Use an account restricted to the schema and read-only permissions needed for your queries.
  • Obtain the host, SQL port, username, password, and schema from your HANA administrator or deployment configuration.
  • Confirm the required TLS settings and whether your system uses a multi-database-container (MDC) configuration. Do not assume that a port or optional MDC field in an example applies to your environment.

How do I install an SAP HANA MCP server?

The package README documents npx -y hana-mcp-server as its default launch approach. Claude Desktop can invoke it directly, so you do not need to copy a database password into a shell command. Keep secrets in the client’s local configuration and protect that file according to your organization’s credential-handling policy.

  1. Install or confirm Node.js: use Node.js 18 or newer, and verify that node and npx are available to the operating-system account that launches Claude Desktop.
  2. Locate Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration: use the configuration file and location documented for your operating system and Claude Desktop version. The package README provides a Claude Desktop example; configuration paths can vary, so use its current instructions rather than guessing a path.
  3. Add the server entry: merge the following entry into the existing JSON object. Preserve any other entries in mcpServers; do not replace the whole file.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "HANA Database": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "hana-mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "HANA_HOST": "your-hana-host.com",
        "HANA_PORT": "443",
        "HANA_USER": "your-username",
        "HANA_PASSWORD": "replace-with-a-secret",
        "HANA_SCHEMA": "your-schema",
        "HANA_SSL": "true",
        "HANA_ENCRYPT": "true",
        "HANA_VALIDATE_CERT": "true"
      }
    }
  }
}

The port and values above are illustrative configuration shape, not universal HANA settings. Replace them with values for your deployment. In particular, confirm the SQL port, schema, TLS and certificate requirements, and whether MDC-specific fields are needed. The README describes instance and database-name values for MDC setups and says they are unnecessary for most single-container setups; do not add or remove them without checking your own configuration.

  1. Validate the JSON: check commas, braces, and quotation marks, especially if you merged the entry into a file with other servers.
  2. Restart Claude Desktop: the package README directs users to restart the client after registering the server.
  3. Check that the tools appear: once Claude Desktop starts the server successfully, inspect the client’s available MCP tools and logs. Use a simple, read-only query or schema-discovery request that your account is permitted to perform.

What do I put in Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration?

The configuration registers a process command and provides the HANA connection values as environment variables. In this package’s README example, Claude Desktop runs npx with -y hana-mcp-server; the environment includes host, port, user, password, schema, and TLS-related variables. The example also covers optional instance and database-name values for MDC arrangements.

Keep HANA_VALIDATE_CERT enabled unless your administrator has documented a specific environment-dependent reason to change it. Disabling certificate validation weakens protection against an untrusted connection. Do not publish a real password in a screenshot, public configuration example, or shared repository.

Claude Code uses a different configuration surface

The same package README documents Claude Code registration through ~/.claude.json or a project-level .mcp.json, using stdio and an npx invocation. Those are Claude Code configuration options, not a universal replacement for Claude Desktop’s settings. Follow the current instructions for the particular Claude product and version you use.

SAP HANAMLToolkit Part of SAP’s hana-ai toolkit; uses the hana-ml Python library with SAP HANA Cloud. SAP’s Architecture Center describes Claude Desktop support and stdio, SSE, and streamable HTTP transports. It can run in-process or as a sidecar. SAP describes governed tools and end-to-end attribution of MCP-side identity into HANA connection and audit context. This is a separate Python-based route, not the Node.js walkthrough above.
hana-mcp-server Community Node.js package; Node.js 18 or newer; connects to SAP HANA or SAP HANA Cloud. Its README documents stdio for desktop and IDE clients, including Claude Desktop and Claude Code. An HTTP entry point is documented from a repository checkout. Provides schema discovery and SQL tools, with optional semantic metadata. The README’s setup uses npm or npx; its documented capabilities and current release should be checked before use.
SAP B1-HANA Broker MCP Community project connecting to HANA and, optionally, SAP Business One Service Layer for writes. Its README describes stdio as development mode and HTTP mode for production deployments. Documents bearer-token authentication for HTTP, scopes, SQL validation, row limits, timeouts, audit logging, and optional human approval for writes. The project says stdio has no authentication; review its code and deployment settings before relying on its controls.
CData Local read-only server using CData’s JDBC driver, a Java archive, and a .prp connection-properties file. Its documented Claude Desktop route adds the Java archive command to client configuration. Requires cloning and building with Maven, installing and licensing the driver, and configuring the connection. This is more involved than the npx route and fits readers already using that driver ecosystem.

The SAP Architecture Center page for HANAMLToolkit was last updated June 15, 2026. The other project details above come from their maintainers’ documentation, not independent security audits. Features and setup can change; verify the current documentation and deployment behavior before relying on them.

How should I secure Claude’s connection to HANA?

  • Limit database permissions: grant only the schema access and operations the task requires. For an initial query workflow, prefer read-only access where the server supports it.
  • Protect the connection: use the TLS, encryption, and certificate-validation settings required by your deployment. Do not turn off validation merely to make a connection error disappear.
  • Keep local secrets private: the MCP environment contains credentials. Restrict access to the configuration and avoid committing it to source control or sharing it in logs and screenshots.
  • Separate tool requests from authorization: Claude can formulate a request, but the server’s implementation, policy, and database account determine what runs and what HANA permits.
  • Treat network access and writes as separate decisions: a local stdio demo does not justify exposing a development server over HTTP. If a workflow needs writes, define the service layer, granted scopes, approval behavior, and audit controls before enabling them.

SAP’s toolkit describes identity attribution and multiple transports; the SAP B1-HANA broker documents bearer-token HTTP authentication and write controls. Those are implementation-specific claims by the respective project maintainers, not guarantees shared by all HANA MCP servers.

Why can’t Claude find my HANA MCP server?

Check the client configuration and process startup before changing database permissions or system-wide settings. The package README specifically notes that a GUI-launched client may not inherit the same PATH as an interactive terminal.

  • Claude does not list the server or its tools: confirm the JSON is valid, the entry is inside mcpServers, and Claude Desktop was restarted. Check the client logs for process-launch errors.
  • The client cannot find npx or node: check which executable paths are available to the GUI-launched client. The package README suggests using absolute executable paths or providing PATH in the MCP environment. Use paths appropriate to your system.
  • npm reports a cache permission error: inspect the error and the account running the client before changing permissions. Avoid broad permission changes as a first response.
  • The server starts but cannot connect: verify the host and SQL port, network reachability from the computer running the server, credentials, schema, and any MDC-specific values.
  • TLS connection fails: compare the configured encryption and certificate-validation settings with the requirements and certificates for your HANA deployment. Do not disable validation without a documented, environment-specific reason.

These are diagnostic categories based on the package’s documented prerequisites and configuration. The right fix depends on your client, operating system, and HANA environment; there is no universal error message or single repair.
