Cloudflare’s cf is an open-beta command-line interface intended to bring a much broader portion of Cloudflare’s API into one searchable tool. In its September 28, 2026 announcement, Cloudflare said the CLI covers more than 3,000 API operations, with JSON output by default and natural-language command search to help users and agents find them. It is not a reason for every Wrangler user to migrate immediately: Cloudflare says some Workers projects will continue to rely on Wrangler during the beta.

What Cloudflare’s cf CLI is

cf is Cloudflare’s unified CLI for operating products and resources through the Cloudflare API. Cloudflare announced it as an open beta on September 28, 2026, and says it can be installed globally with npm i -g cf. The company’s examples include Worker deployment, logs and observability, Access, domains, and WAF. These illustrate the intended breadth; they do not mean every account, plan, or permission exposes every operation.

Cloudflare says the CLI’s commands are generated from API schemas through Forge, the pipeline it also uses for API documentation and SDK generation. That approach is how the company says it extends coverage beyond the operations represented by Wrangler’s hand-built command set. The announced figure is more than 3,000 API operations, not 3,000 individually hand-designed commands with equivalent polish or ease of use.

How broad coverage is meant to stay usable

Search helps locate an operation

A large API surface can be difficult to navigate by command name alone. Cloudflare says cf cli search accepts a natural-language request and searches command descriptions and parameters to suggest likely matches. The help flow also points new users toward search. This is a discovery aid, not a guarantee that the suggested operation is the right or safe choice for a particular account.

JSON is the default output

Cloudflare says cf returns JSON by default so agents can filter structured data without parsing terminal tables. Its announcement describes the output as “pretty printed for humans and condensed for agents for maximum context savings.” JSON and search address different problems: JSON makes results machine-readable, while search helps identify a command in the first place.

Coverage is not the same as uniform ergonomics

Cloudflare describes cf as covering the entirety of its API surface, but an API-derived command inventory should not be mistaken for thousands of equally polished workflows. Schema-generated operations broaden access; users still need to understand the command’s parameters, their permissions, and the effect of the change they are asking it to make.

cf and Wrangler: what changes

Area cf Wrangler
API coverage Cloudflare says it covers more than 3,000 API operations, generated from API schemas. Cloudflare describes about 280 command paths built up over time.
Finding commands cf cli search searches descriptions and parameters using a natural-language request. The launch announcement presents Wrangler as the existing, narrower command surface; it does not describe an equivalent natural-language search feature.
Output JSON is the default, intended to work for people and agents. The launch announcement does not specify a comparable default-output change for Wrangler.
Worker configuration and local development Cloudflare says the initial Worker-focused path introduces a TypeScript cloudflare.config.ts and makes Vite the default local development path. During the beta, cf can continue delegating development and deployment to Wrangler for certain Worker projects.
Migration and compatibility cf migrate converts existing Vite-based Workers to cloudflare.config.ts, according to Cloudflare. Still relevant during the beta for JavaScript Workers that depend on esbuild and for Rust and Python Workers; Cloudflare’s launch plan includes a final major release and 18 months of maintenance after the beta ends.

The launch numbers need context. Cloudflare says Wrangler had about 280 command paths and cf covers more than 3,000 API operations; these are not like-for-like counts of equally designed commands. The difference reflects a change in approach as well as scale: API schemas generate broad coverage, while search and JSON are intended to make that breadth more practical for people and agents.

What the Worker configuration changes mean

Cloudflare says cloudflare.config.ts provides TypeScript configuration with language-server feedback, and that Vite becomes the default local development path. The stated design aim is to give editors and agents configuration they can inspect and type-check, while using a familiar Vite-based development ecosystem. These are product goals, not evidence that every deployment will be safer or faster.

Type checking and editor feedback can help identify certain configuration mistakes, but they do not establish that credentials have the right scope, that a command targets the intended resource, or that a production change is safe. Review permissions, target identifiers, and the expected effect before executing a consequential operation.

Should you migrate a Wrangler project now?

Not automatically. Cloudflare’s migration guidance is specific to existing Vite-based Workers: cf migrate converts them to cloudflare.config.ts. During the beta, Cloudflare says cf can continue delegating development and deployment to Wrangler for JavaScript Workers that depend on esbuild and for Rust and Python Workers. That makes migration a project-specific decision rather than a blanket replacement.

  • If your Worker already uses Vite, review the migration path and confirm the generated configuration matches your project before adopting it.
  • If your JavaScript Worker depends on esbuild, or it is written in Rust or Python, account for Wrangler’s continued role during the beta.
  • If you primarily need access to Cloudflare API operations beyond your existing Wrangler workflow, evaluate cf for those tasks without assuming you must move your Worker build and deployment process at the same time.
  • Before changing a production workflow, check Cloudflare’s current documentation for beta status, supported project types, and migration guidance; those details can change.

Cloudflare said at launch that it planned to release one final major Wrangler version after the beta and maintain it for 18 months after the beta ends. That is a stated plan, not a calendar end date: the announcement does not provide a beta-end date from which to calculate the maintenance period.

What Cloudflare’s adoption figures do—and do not—show

Cloudflare reported that agents accounted for 48% of Wrangler usage in the week before its September 28, 2026 announcement, compared with one quarter (25%) in March 2026 and single-digit percentages in 2025. These are Cloudflare’s own usage figures, not an independent survey or a measure of how well agents complete tasks. They help explain the company’s focus on searchable commands and structured output, but they do not establish that every user needs an agent-oriented CLI.

Where to check current instructions

Because cf is in open beta, use Cloudflare’s CLI documentation for current installation, usage, and compatibility guidance. Cloudflare’s September 28, 2026 announcement describes the launch features and migration plans.
