Wireless high-resolution audio is audio sent over a wireless connection using a codec and compatible devices intended to preserve high-resolution playback. The label alone does not guarantee lossless or bit-perfect transmission: those depend on the specific codec, source, connection and both devices.
What does “high resolution” mean?
High-resolution audio generally refers to audio formats with specifications beyond conventional CD audio, commonly expressed as bit depth and sample rate. Those figures describe the format; they do not by themselves say whether a wireless link reproduces the original samples exactly.
In a 2024 request for information, the Bluetooth SIG listed support for 96 kHz and 24-bit audio among the capabilities sought for a high-resolution codec. The document is an RFI describing requested capabilities and evaluation criteria—not an adopted Bluetooth codec standard. Its separate lossless criteria focus on matching the input bit-for-bit and supporting at least 16-bit audio. Bluetooth SIG

No. “High-resolution” and “lossless” describe different things. High-resolution concerns the audio format’s specifications; lossless means the decoded audio reproduces the input exactly. A codec may support high-resolution playback without transmitting the source bit-for-bit, so check the specific codec’s claim rather than relying on a general “hi-res” label.

Certification is another separate claim. The Japan Audio Society’s Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo is used in a certification context for wireless products and codecs. Sony identifies LDAC as a Bluetooth codec certified for that logo. That certification should not be read as a promise that every LDAC transmission is lossless. Sony: LDAC
How do common wireless audio codecs differ?
| Codec | What the cited source says | What that does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| LDAC | Sony says LDAC transmits three times more data than standard Bluetooth technology; Sony also identifies it as certified for the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo. Sony: LDAC | The higher data rate and certification do not, by themselves, establish bit-perfect lossless transmission. |
| aptX HD | Qualcomm lists 24-bit audio, sampling up to 48 kHz and a bitrate of 576 kbit/s at 48 kHz. Qualcomm: aptX HD | These specifications do not establish 96 kHz support or lossless transport. |
| aptX Lossless | Qualcomm describes bit-exact CD-quality 16-bit/44.1 kHz transmission. Its Snapdragon Sound FAQ says up to 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio is possible with compatible devices and suitable radio-frequency conditions. Qualcomm: aptX Lossless | The lossless claim is conditional on device compatibility and connection conditions; it is distinct from aptX HD. |
| LC3 | Bluetooth SIG describes LC3 as LE Audio’s high-quality, low-power codec and says listening tests found it can outperform SBC at the same bitrate. Bluetooth SIG: LE Audio | The cited FAQ does not claim LC3 has Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification. |
These are claims from the respective standards body or codec vendors, not a head-to-head evaluation of every implementation. Sony’s support FAQ, last modified in 2022, says standard Bluetooth does not meet Hi-Res specifications, while Sony separately describes LDAC as offering an enhanced wireless experience and identifies it as certified for the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo. The useful distinction is between generic Bluetooth capability, a particular codec’s design or certification, and lossless operation. Sony support FAQ

What do the specifications tell you in practice?
Codec support must match at both ends
Your phone, computer or audio player and your headphones or speaker must both support the same codec. The connection also needs to negotiate that codec; a codec appearing in one device’s specifications does not prove it is active for a particular playback session. Sony advises using a compatible playback chain. Sony support FAQ

The source sets the ceiling
Wireless processing cannot restore detail that is absent from the source. Sony notes that non-Hi-Res audio cannot simply be converted into Hi-Res audio. A high-resolution codec cannot turn a low-quality or already-lossy recording into the original high-resolution master. Sony support FAQ

Connection conditions can affect capability
Qualcomm qualifies aptX Lossless performance on compatible devices and radio-frequency conditions. A codec’s maximum specification is therefore not a guarantee that every device pair or listening environment will deliver that mode continuously. Qualcomm: aptX Lossless
Listening-test claims need their context
Qualcomm’s aptX HD page summarizes a 2015 University of Salford test involving 24 participants. Qualcomm reports that participants were unable to consistently detect a difference between 96 kHz/24-bit audio and 48 kHz/24-bit aptX HD encoded-and-decoded audio in that test. This is a vendor’s account of one specific study; it is not a universal finding about all listeners, codecs or listening conditions. Qualcomm: aptX HD

How to check a wireless audio product’s claim
- Identify the exact codec. Look for a named codec such as LDAC, aptX HD or aptX Lossless rather than relying on a broad “hi-res” description.
- Check both devices. Confirm the exact transmitting device and receiving product support the same codec, and check whether that mode is actually negotiated during playback.
- Read the stated limits. Compare the published bit depth, sample rate and bitrate, and distinguish high-resolution or high-bitrate support from an explicit bit-exact lossless claim.
- Verify certification separately. If a product uses the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo, treat that as a certification claim—not as proof that a specific playback session is lossless.
- Check the audio source and connection. Confirm the file or streaming source has the quality you expect, and account for device compatibility and connection stability.
For example, aptX HD’s listed 24-bit support does not make it interchangeable with aptX Lossless: Qualcomm lists aptX HD at up to 48 kHz and describes aptX Lossless separately as bit-exact under qualified conditions. Likewise, LDAC’s logo certification and data-transmission claim do not on their own establish lossless operation.
What “wireless high-resolution” means when shopping
Assess the complete playback chain, not just the headphones or speaker. The most useful product information is the codec support on both ends, any Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification, maximum supported bit depth and sample rate, whether the manufacturer claims lossy high-resolution or bit-exact lossless playback, the quality of the source, and the connection behavior expected for that device pair.
