There are seven E.M.M.I. encounters in Metroid Dread if you include the early tutorial encounter. The game features six different E.M.M.I. later on; counting only those is why some answers give the number as six.
Why do some counts say six and others say seven?
It depends on whether the early tutorial E.M.M.I. is included. Nintendo Wire’s gameplay guide distinguishes six different E.M.M.I. from the seventh encountered in a tutorial near the beginning. So the clearest total for encounters is seven, while “six different E.M.M.I.” excludes the tutorial encounter.

What are the E.M.M.I. in Metroid Dread?
Nintendo describes an E.M.M.I. as an “Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier”—a highly agile research robot capable of extracting DNA. The Galactic Federation sent the robots to planet ZDR to investigate whether the X parasite was present. The machines went dark and later identify Samus as their target.
How E.M.M.I. encounters work
Nintendo says E.M.M.I. are confined to designated E.M.M.I. Zones, separated from other areas by E.M.M.I. Zone Doors. Once one detects Samus, it pursues her. Deep inside each zone is the means to temporarily enable the Omega Cannon, which Nintendo identifies as the only weapon capable of destroying an E.M.M.I.

What Nintendo’s official count does—and does not—say
Nintendo’s June 30, 2021 report asks how many E.M.M.I. there are and shows seven shadows behind Samus in an illustration. That is a visual clue, not an explicit statement of the final gameplay count in the report’s text. The six-versus-seven encounter distinction comes from Nintendo Wire’s gameplay guide.
