No modality is proven to be the most secure for consumer smart locks. The evidence available does not provide independent, comparable attack-test results for palm-vein, face, and fingerprint locks. To judge a particular lock, look beyond its biometric label to independent testing, spoof detection, data handling, app and communications security, and fallback access.
Why the biometric label does not settle security
A lock’s biometric system includes more than the sensor. It captures a sample, compares it with an enrolled template, detects possible presentation attacks, decides whether to unlock, and interacts with the rest of the lock. Weaknesses in any of those stages can matter. So can the lock’s app, radio connections, firmware updates, and recovery methods.
There are no independently comparable lock-specific results here that establish whether palm-vein, face, or fingerprint recognition is harder to spoof in consumer smart locks. A manufacturer’s recognition-rate or speed figure is not a substitute for an independent security evaluation.

- Matching performance: Ask for false-match or false-accept rates and false-reject rates, along with the test conditions, thresholds, test population, and product version. An accuracy or recognition-rate claim alone does not explain how often an unauthorized person might be accepted.
- Presentation-attack detection (PAD): Look for a report that identifies the attack methods and instruments tested, as well as the attack presentation accept rate. Examples of attacks considered in biometric evaluation include printed or displayed face images, fingerprint artifacts, and latent prints.
- Enrollment and storage: Check where biometric templates are kept, who can access them, and whether they can be deleted. Use the manufacturer’s technical and privacy documentation rather than assuming that all locks store biometric data the same way.
- Whole-lock protection: Review the security of app accounts, wireless links, firmware updates, and account recovery. Biometric performance does not answer whether those parts of the system are protected.
- Reliability and access: Check how the lock behaves after failed reads or power loss, and what documented emergency or fallback entry methods it provides.
- Fit and deployment: Confirm the exact model fits the door and supports the regional ecosystem you intend to use; consult its specifications and installation guide.
What biometric standards can—and cannot—tell you
FIDO biometric evaluation guidance
The FIDO Alliance’s Biometric Requirements, version 5.0, describes measures including false accept rate (FAR), false reject rate (FRR), and impostor attack presentation accept rate (IAPAR). It includes face-image and fingerprint attack examples. For its described certification context, FIDO says facial recognition shall implement PAD; its guidance says PAD should be implemented for iris and fingerprint modalities. These criteria help explain what rigorous evaluation can examine, but they do not show that any smart lock named here was tested or certified under them.

NIST thresholds have a defined scope
NIST SP 800-63B, in the current SP 800-63-4 edition, says a biometric system in its covered authenticator context shall achieve a false-match rate (FMR) of one in 10,000 or better across demographic groups. It also addresses PAD for biometrics in that context. This threshold is not a measured result for any lock discussed here, is not a blanket smart-lock requirement, and does not rank the three modalities for door locks.
Biometric security is only part of system security
The ISO catalog record for ISO/IEC 19792:2025 identifies recognition performance, presentation-attack detection, and privacy as biometric-specific security evaluation topics. It excludes non-biometric system aspects such as databases and communication channels. That distinction is important for smart locks: biometric evaluation alone cannot establish the security of the complete lock and its connected services.

What current product documentation says
The products below illustrate that these recognition methods appear in smart locks. Their manufacturer pages describe features and specifications; they do not establish independent comparative security.
| Example | Manufacturer documentation says | What that evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Aqara U100 — fingerprint | Aqara’s US product page lists a built-in fingerprint reader and keypad, a 98.6% recognition-rate figure, recognition time below 0.5 seconds, and local storage for up to 50 fingerprints. Aqara announced availability through its Amazon brand stores in the United States and Canada. Product page; announcement. | These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified attack-resistance or comparative-security results. |
| Philips 5000 series DDL250XW5KMC/37 — palm vein | Philips’ US product page lists palm-vein recognition for this smart deadbolt. Product page. | The cited page does not provide comparable independent attack-test results. |
| Philips DDL902EAFGW/00 — palm vein, face, and fingerprint | Philips’ product document describes it as a palm-and-face-recognition smart lock, lists fingerprint among its methods, and specifies palm-vein and facial recognition sensors operating up to one meter away. Product document. | The sensor-distance specification is a manufacturer claim, not independent proof of security or a ranking against other modalities. |
How to choose when no modality wins on evidence
- Choose the exact lock model and region you are considering; features and availability can vary by market.
- Seek an independent report for that model that states its FAR or equivalent, FRR, operating conditions, and PAD attack results. If the seller provides only recognition speed or a recognition-rate figure, treat that as limited performance information.
- Review where biometric data is stored, how it can be deleted, and how the app, wireless connections, and firmware are protected.
- Check the documented fallback and emergency-entry methods, including what happens during power loss or repeated failed reads.
- If comparable independent results are unavailable, do not infer that one modality is safer from its name or a feature list. Make the choice based on documented whole-lock safeguards and the practical access methods you need.
Bottom line
The available evidence does not identify palm-vein, face, or fingerprint recognition as the most secure choice for a consumer smart lock. A defensible comparison requires independent, model-specific testing—including spoof resistance—and a review of the entire lock system, not just its biometric sensor.
