To use Zelle with State Employees Credit Union of Maryland (SECU of MD), sign in to the SECU app or online banking, open Transfers & Payments, and select Send money with Zelle®. Enroll an email address or U.S. mobile number, then use Zelle to send, request, or receive money. Only send payments to people or businesses you trust: SECU says Zelle payments have no purchase protection and generally cannot be canceled after reaching an enrolled recipient.

How to enroll in Zelle through SECU

  1. Open the SECU of Maryland mobile app or sign in to SECU online banking.
  2. In the app, open the main menu and select Transfers & Payments, then Send money with Zelle®. In online banking, open the Zelle option if it is available in your account.
  3. Choose the email address or U.S. mobile number you want to link to your account, then follow the prompts. SECU’s instructions for business accounts describe entering a one-time verification code and accepting the terms.
  4. Check for a confirmation that enrollment is complete before using the address or number to send or receive payments.

SECU of MD appears in Zelle’s official participating-institution directory. SECU says that since March 31, 2025, users must enroll through a participating bank or credit union. If the recipient’s institution is not listed, SECU recommends using another payment method.

How to send money with Zelle

  1. Open Zelle in the SECU app or online banking and choose Send.
  2. Select a contact or add the recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile number associated with Zelle.
  3. Enter the amount and, if you want, a note.
  4. Review the recipient’s name and contact information, along with the payment amount. Send only after confirming the details.
  5. Submit the payment and check the confirmation in the app or online banking.

SECU supports QR codes in its app. To share yours, open Zelle, choose Send, tap the QR icon, and select My Code. To pay someone by scanning their code, check the name shown in the app before sending.

How to request or receive money

Request a payment

  1. Open Zelle and select Request.
  2. Enter the recipient’s enrolled email address, U.S. mobile number, or Zelle tag.
  3. Verify that the recipient shown is the person you intend to contact, then submit the request.

Receive a payment

Give the sender the email address or U.S. mobile number you enrolled with Zelle. If you receive a notification about a payment before enrolling that address or number, SECU says to follow the link in the notification, select SECU, and enroll using the same email address or mobile number that received it.

Fees, eligibility, and transfer timing

SECU says it does not charge a fee for using Zelle in its app. Your mobile carrier may charge messaging or data rates. Both sender and recipient need eligible checking or savings accounts based in the United States.

SECU says payments to enrolled Zelle users typically arrive within minutes; that is not a guarantee of a specific delivery time. A May 17, 2024 SECU announcement reported limits of $2,400 per day and a $4,000 maximum per month. SECU’s current Zelle FAQ does not state those limits, so treat them as historical figures and check the current limit in your account or with SECU before relying on it.

When it is safe to use Zelle—and when it is not

Zelle is intended for sending money to people and businesses you know and trust. SECU advises against using it to pay strangers for items advertised on online sales or bidding sites. Neither SECU nor Zelle offers purchase protection if an item does not arrive or is not as described.

  • Confirm the recipient. Check the name and enrolled email address or mobile number before sending. If using a QR code, verify the name displayed after scanning.
  • Understand cancellation limits. A payment sent to an already enrolled recipient goes directly to that person’s account and generally cannot be canceled through the ordinary cancellation process.
  • Know the pending-payment exception. You can cancel a pending payment only when the recipient has not enrolled with Zelle.
  • Act promptly if something goes wrong. If you sent money to the wrong person, contact SECU as soon as possible. SECU says qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement; that does not mean every scam or payment dispute qualifies.

Using Zelle with an eligible SECU small-business account

SECU says eligible small-business accounts can send, receive, or request money through the app or online banking. A business receiving customer payments can share its enrolled email address or U.S. mobile number. SECU says it does not charge a fee for small-business Zelle use, although mobile-carrier data and message rates may apply. If the Zelle option does not appear, contact SECU to check whether the account is eligible.
