Samsung describes holding 1 as the usual way to reach voicemail, while noting that options vary by carrier. If the mailbox does not start, the service or setup instructions may be carrier-specific. Samsung’s Galaxy setup guidance and call-settings guidance both direct users with service questions to their carrier.
Choose between carrier voicemail and visual voicemail
| Option | How you access messages | What setup depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional carrier voicemail | Dial into the mailbox, commonly by holding 1 in the Phone app. | Your carrier’s voicemail service and prompts. |
| Visual voicemail | Use a carrier-provided app to view messages in an inbox. | Carrier support, the correct app, and any permissions it requests. |
Set up visual voicemail
The app name and icon can vary by carrier. Open the visual voicemail app provided for your line, review its setup information, select Continue if shown, grant the requested permissions, and follow the remaining prompts. If the app is missing or cannot finish setup, ask your carrier whether visual voicemail is supported and which app to use. Samsung outlines this carrier-dependent setup in its voicemail and visual voicemail guidance.

Record a greeting callers can understand
A useful greeting identifies who callers have reached, says you cannot answer, and gives one clear next step. Speak at a measured pace in a quiet place. If the system uses a beep, pause briefly before leaving the message. Avoid sharing sensitive details or a detailed schedule in a personal greeting.

Listen to the recording and make another one if it is difficult to understand. To change a traditional carrier greeting after initial setup, dial into the mailbox and follow the carrier’s menu prompts; Samsung does not describe one universal edit procedure for every carrier.

Visual voicemail is missing or will not finish setup
Ask your carrier whether the service is available on your line and which app to install or open. App availability and setup vary by carrier.
Do not confuse Direct voicemail with your carrier mailbox
Samsung documents Direct voicemail as a separate feature, not a replacement for setting up carrier voicemail. In Samsung’s current US guidance, it is available only on Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher; feature availability may also vary by model, software, and carrier. It works only while the phone is on and connected to the mobile network, so it is not an option to rely on over Wi-Fi alone. Check Samsung’s Direct voicemail requirements if you are looking for that feature.
