MP4 fast start puts the movie’s index, the moov atom, near the beginning of the file so playback can begin during a progressive download. In FFmpeg, enabling it means an additional pass to move that index; FFmpeg warns the operation can take time, but its documentation gives no general runtime or price. The actual cost depends on the file and workflow, so claims that fast start always doubles processing cost are not supported.
What MP4 fast start does
The moov atom contains information describing a movie and references its sample data; it does not contain the media samples themselves. When this index is near the front of an MP4, a player receiving the file progressively can get the information it needs to begin playback before the full download finishes. Apple’s historical QuickTime guide calls this delivery method “Progressive Download” or “Fast Start” and distinguishes it from streaming: the file is still downloaded to the viewer. That guide explains the terminology and concept, not current browser support or implementation details.

Why fast start can add processing work
FFmpeg’s MOV/MP4 muxer documents faststart as a second pass that moves the moov atom to the beginning of the file. FFmpeg says this operation can take a while and is unavailable in some situations, including fragmented output. It is not enabled by default. The documentation does not quantify how long the pass takes, how much compute it uses, or what it costs on a particular system.

That supports a limited conclusion: relocating the index can add processing time and file I/O. It does not establish a universal percentage overhead, a doubling of total job cost, or a predictable dollar charge. The FFmpeg formats documentation describes both the faststart flag and its constraints.
What “expensive” might mean in your workflow
Fast start has no published general cost figure in the cited documentation. In a real pipeline, the relevant costs to measure may include:

- Processing time and queue delay for the extra pass.
- Input and output reads and writes, along with temporary storage requirements.
- Retries or operational effort when jobs fail or need to be rerun.
- Charges for a managed transcoding service, if one is used.
These are measurement categories, not established amounts. A large bill or long job should not automatically be attributed to moving the MP4 index. Check whether the workflow also re-encoded video, generated multiple renditions, moved files between storage tiers, or ran through a managed service; these are possibilities to investigate, not proven causes.

Choose a workflow that matches the file and pipeline
Local FFmpeg remuxing
If the existing codecs and output container are suitable, a stream-copy remux is a natural option to investigate because fast start changes file layout. Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding the media streams, but producing a new layout still requires processing and writing output. Test the documented FFmpeg options on a representative file, especially if throughput or latency matters. Fragmented output is a documented case in which faststart will not work.

Reserving space with moov_size
FFmpeg also documents moov_size, which reserves space at the start of the file for the atom. This is a distinct approach, not a guaranteed faster alternative: if the reserved space is too small, muxing fails. Consult the current MOV/MP4 muxer options for exact syntax and constraints.
Managed transcoding
AWS Elemental MediaConvert documents an MP4 MOOV placement option for progressive downloading. This makes managed processing a possible fit for teams already using that service, but the available documentation here does not establish a price advantage or performance comparison against local FFmpeg. How to estimate the cost for your case
- Confirm the output requirement. Determine whether viewers need progressive-download playback and whether the file format and delivery path support the intended experience.
- Separate layout work from encoding. Record whether the job only remuxes with stream copy or also decodes and re-encodes streams, creates renditions, or moves files between storage systems.
- Measure a representative file. Run the intended workflow on files representative of your sizes and storage conditions. Record elapsed processing time, queue delay, reads and writes, temporary storage, and failure or retry behavior.
- Apply your actual cost basis. Use the compute, storage, transfer, and service rates that apply to your environment. The cited documentation supplies no general fast-start price or head-to-head cost comparison.
- Check for unsupported output cases. If you use fragmented output, consult FFmpeg’s muxer documentation before relying on
faststart; it lists fragmented output among situations where the operation does not work.
