To clear recent searches saved by Windows Search on your PC, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions. Under History, select Clear device search history. This clears the device’s local Windows Search history—not Microsoft-account web searches, browser history, or Windows Activity history.
Clear recent device search history
- Select Start, then open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Open Search permissions.
- Under History, select Clear device search history.
Microsoft Support says, “Windows Search saves your search history locally on your device to help you find things faster.” Past searches can also affect how prominently an app appears in Windows Search results. Clearing this history resets that local search-history feature; it does not delete files or uninstall apps. Microsoft Support: Windows Search and privacy.
Choose the control for the history you mean
| History | Where it is associated | How to clear or manage it | What the control covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device search terms | This Windows device | Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions > History > Clear device search history | Local Windows Search history; it is separate from account and browser records. Microsoft Support. |
| Bing/web searches on a personal Microsoft account | Your personal Microsoft account | Use the Microsoft privacy dashboard to clear search history. | Account-associated searches. Searches made while signed out are not shown on the dashboard and are unaffected by its deletion. Microsoft says some copies may remain in backup systems for a limited time. Microsoft Support: privacy dashboard and search history. |
| Microsoft Search history for a work or school account | Your work or school account | Sign in to that account and manage associated history on the Bing Search History page. | History associated with the work or school account, not the device-only history control. Microsoft Support and Bing Search History. |
| Windows Activity history | Windows Activity history settings | Open Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history and use the clear-history control. | A separate Windows record. Turning off Activity history storage can also stop on-device features that rely on it. Microsoft Support: Activity history and your privacy. |
| Browser searches or visited pages | The browser you used | Use that browser’s own history controls. | Browser-managed records; the Windows Search setting is not a universal browser-history clearing control. Microsoft Support: browsing history. |
If Search permissions looks different
Settings labels can change. If you do not see Search permissions or the History section, check your Windows 11 build and the wording currently shown in Settings rather than assuming the device-history control also clears other records. Microsoft’s documented route is Search permissions > History.
