Aim for fewer than roughly 200 lines in CLAUDE.md, but treat that as a practical target—not a hard limit. Anthropic’s guidance is to keep the file short and signal-dense because Claude Code loads it as persistent context. Keep instructions that matter across tasks; move detailed or occasional guidance elsewhere.
Is 200 lines a hard limit for CLAUDE.md?
No. Anthropic’s Claude Help Center recommends keeping the file “under roughly 200 lines,” but does not describe 200 as a technical cap or report a sudden drop in performance beyond that point. A file slightly over the target is not automatically broken. What matters is whether its contents are useful, current, and worth including in every session.
Line count is only a rough proxy for how much context a file occupies: lines vary in length and information density. There is no established universal token count, dollar cost, or quality penalty for each additional line.

Claude Code prepends CLAUDE.md to every turn, according to the Claude Help Center’s usage guidance. That makes it persistent context: unnecessary material takes up space that could otherwise be used for the task and conversation.
#1 Best Overall
Context occupancy and billing are related but not identical. Anthropic’s April 15, 2026 guide says the first request pays the full input-token price; later requests within roughly five minutes may use prompt caching at a lower cache-read rate. Changing the file invalidates that cache, so the next request incurs full input pricing again. Caching can reduce repeat billing, but it does not remove the file from context.
A long debugging session can also accumulate conversation and file context, which may become a separate and larger factor than CLAUDE.md. If a task no longer needs earlier chat history, /clear starts a fresh conversation while retaining project files; /compact summarizes history to free space while preserving essential context. These commands address conversation history, not the length of the project instructions.

What belongs in the file?
Prioritize guidance Claude needs across many tasks. Anthropic’s guide recommends information that is durable, specific to the project, and difficult to infer reliably from the repository:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Accurate commands to build, test, lint, and run the project locally.
- Project conventions that are easy to violate and apply across tasks.
- A brief architecture overview that helps orient work.
- Hard constraints and recurring gotchas.
Be selective with material that is useful only occasionally. Full API documentation, changelogs, long historical notes, and facts obvious from the file tree are poor uses of always-loaded space. Link to or point Claude toward those materials when a task calls for them instead.

How should you handle specialized instructions?
Use the top-level CLAUDE.md as an orientation and index, not as a copy of every project handbook. Anthropic’s engineering guidance describes it as automatically loaded context, while its June 18, 2026 steering article discusses scoped rules and exclusions as ways to reduce irrelevant instructions. Put specialized guidance where it applies, and check the current configuration documentation before relying on exact setup options because product behavior can change.
For each candidate instruction, ask:
- Does Claude need this on most tasks, or only a particular kind of work?
- Would omitting it cause a meaningful mistake?
- Is it accurate and still applicable?
- Can Claude find it when needed without loading it every turn?
If a rule is task-specific, a scoped instruction or referenced document may be a better home. Keep the always-loaded file focused on information with broad, recurring value.
Rank #4
How do you keep the file useful over time?
Anthropic’s Help Center suggests adding guidance after Claude has needed correction twice on the same issue, then reviewing the file every few weeks. Treat this as a maintenance heuristic, not a proven threshold. Before adding a note, make sure it describes a durable pattern rather than a one-off fix.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Remove instructions that are stale, redundant, or whose purpose is unclear.
- Check that commands and conventions still match the project.
- Move detailed references and occasional guidance out of the always-loaded file.
- Add a concise rule when the same important mistake has recurred.
