Cheap streaming hardware is not automatically unsafe, but a device that promises free premium shows or asks you to bypass normal security checks deserves caution. The FBI warns that some compromised streaming devices can join botnets or residential proxy networks, routing other people’s internet activity through your home connection. That creates real network and security risks—but it does not mean every off-brand device is infected or that every compromised box steals data stored on it.
Are cheap streaming devices safe?
Price alone is not a reliable security test. An unfamiliar brand is not proof of malware, and a familiar brand is not a guarantee of security. The more useful question is whether the manufacturer is identifiable, the device receives software updates, and its apps come from an official, trusted store.
The FBI’s 2025 advisory describes BADBOX 2.0 as a botnet involving “millions of infected devices.” That figure describes the botnet; the advisory does not give a total-device denominator or an individual buyer’s chance of infection. It should not be read as a prevalence rate for inexpensive streaming devices.

Some devices may arrive with malware already installed. Others may become compromised during setup when they download apps from unofficial marketplaces. If an infected device connects to home Wi-Fi, criminals may use it as part of a botnet or residential proxy network. A proxy can route outside users’ internet traffic through the household’s connection and IP address without the owner’s knowledge.

This can make suspicious activity appear to originate from your connection. The FBI warns of possible identity theft and other cybercrime, but its advisories do not establish that every compromised streaming device steals personal data stored on the device or elsewhere in the home.
Which warning signs should you take seriously?
- Free premium content claims: Be wary of devices advertised as providing free premium sports, shows, or movies. The FBI says they may contain malware or backdoors.
- Requests to disable Google Play Protect: Do not switch off this protection simply because a device or app prompts you to do so.
- Unofficial app marketplaces or forced sideloading: Apps from sources that are not official and trusted can create an infection route.
- Unclear manufacturer or update support: If you cannot establish who makes the device or how it receives firmware and software updates, you have less basis for judging its ongoing security.
- Unexpected network activity: Unexplained traffic from a streaming device is a reason to investigate rather than assume normal operation.
These are indicators to consider together, not proof that any one inexpensive device is compromised. In its March 2026 advisory, the FBI put the warning this way: “Avoid TV streaming devices that claim to provide free sports, TV shows, and movies, as they may contain malware or backdoors that hijack your internet network and can lead to identity theft or other cyber crimes.”

What to check before buying or setting up a device
- Identify the manufacturer. Look for clear manufacturer and support information rather than relying on a low price or a generic product listing.
- Check update support. Find out whether the manufacturer provides firmware and software updates. The FBI notes that timely patching helps reduce exposure to cybersecurity threats.
- Check where apps come from. Prefer official, trusted app stores and known publishers. Avoid installing apps from unofficial marketplaces or sideloading software you cannot verify.
- Review setup prompts and permissions. Treat requests to disable Play Protect, install unknown applications, or grant unusual permissions as warning signs.
- Reject suspicious content promises. Do not treat claims of free access to premium sports, TV shows, or movies as a legitimate security feature.
How to reduce risk after connecting a streaming device
- Keep the device’s firmware and software updated.
- Use apps from official, trusted stores and known publishers.
- Monitor connected devices and look for unexplained network traffic.
- Review any unexpected requests to install apps, change security settings, or grant permissions.
If a device seems suspicious, the FBI’s 2025 advisory says to consider disconnecting it from your network. You can report suspected intrusion to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.
