FM feedback (FMFB) and phase-locked-loop (PLL) demodulators can extend the usable range of an FM receiver at low carrier-to-noise ratios by tracking the signal and limiting the noise that reaches the detection process. In Dr. Steve Arar’s September 12, 2026, All About Circuits article, the reported typical practical extension is about 5–7 dB for FMFB and 2–3 dB for most PLL implementations. These are source-reported ranges, not guarantees for a particular receiver—and neither means a general output-SNR improvement at high signal levels.
Why FM receivers have a threshold
An FM discriminator or slope detector must process a bandwidth comparable to the full FM waveform bandwidth. That can admit substantially more noise than the message bandwidth alone would suggest. As the input carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) falls, noise can overwhelm the signal’s changing phase and frequency. Degradation may then become abrupt: the noisy input vector can sweep around the origin, causing phase wrapping and large output spikes. This behavior is the FM threshold effect.
FMFB and PLL demodulators add feedback so an oscillator tracks the input’s changing frequency or phase. The tracking loop acts as a narrowband filter around the signal behavior the receiver is following, reducing the noise that meaningfully reaches detection. This can delay threshold effects, but it does not remove the threshold phenomenon or guarantee improved output SNR under every condition. A NASA technical report likewise describes PLL and FMFB demodulation as threshold-extension approaches while noting that they remain subject to FM threshold limits (NASA technical report, 1972).
How an FMFB demodulator works
A conceptual FMFB circuit has a forward path containing a mixer, an intermediate-frequency (IF) bandpass filter, a discriminator, and a message lowpass filter. A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) returns an FM signal through the feedback path. With sufficient loop gain, the forward path counteracts the VCO’s modulation action, allowing the receiver to recover the message.

The VCO’s phase is the integral of its control voltage, and its instantaneous angular frequency varies with that voltage:
φex(t) = kvco ∫vcont(t)dt
ωvco(t) = ω0 + kvcovcont(t)
As the loop follows the input’s slowly changing instantaneous frequency, the discriminator sees a narrower band of noise centered around the VCO frequency. The IF filter can therefore limit noise exposure, but it must still pass the wanted FM signal without distortion. The related circuit explanation is in All About Circuits’ FMFB demodulator analysis.

What the bandwidth example does—and does not—show
In the target article’s worked example, modulation index β = 10 and loop-gain factor αkvco = 12 yield an idealized IF bandwidth of BIF = 0.16Bc. This illustrates how feedback can reduce deviation at the IF filter and thus reduce the idealized bandwidth needed at that point. It is a calculated example, not a measured result or universal filter specification. In practice, the IF filter may need more bandwidth to avoid distorting the FM signal, and a low-order filter is generally preferred in the loop for stability.
How a PLL demodulator works
A basic PLL contains a phase detector, a lowpass filter, and a VCO in a feedback loop. The phase detector compares the input phase with the VCO phase; the filtered detector output controls the VCO. When the loop is locked, the VCO follows the input FM signal. Because the VCO’s frequency deviation is proportional to its control voltage, that control voltage carries the recovered message.

- Bass & Treble Control】Designed with volume, treble and bass control knobs for more delicate adjustment of the sound, much fun and high playability. Include controller for distant audio adjustments. Note: There is an isolation plastic sheet at the bottom of the remote control, which needs to be removed before use.
In the arrangement described by All About Circuits, a multiplier-type phase detector has a fixed 90-degree phase difference when the loop is locked. The PLL’s tracking action, like FMFB’s, narrows the noise that reaches the detection process. A companion explanation of the design and its bandwidth context appears in All About Circuits’ PLL demodulation article. For scale, that article’s Carson-rule illustration estimates 6.6 kHz of FM bandwidth for a 300 Hz message frequency and modulation index β = 10; that is an illustration for those parameters, not a general bandwidth figure.
FMFB versus PLL: what the comparison means
| Comparison | FMFB | PLL |
|---|---|---|
| Typical practical threshold extension reported by the target article | About 5–7 dB | About 2–3 dB for most implementations |
| Circuit approach | Mixer, IF bandpass filter, discriminator, message lowpass filter, and feedback VCO | Phase detector, lowpass filter, and feedback VCO |
| VCO free-running frequency described in the target article | ωc − ωIF | Input carrier frequency, ωc |
| Design consideration emphasized | IF bandwidth must pass the wanted FM signal; filter order and loop stability constrain the practical design | Requires a tracking loop that remains locked and follows the input FM signal |
| Meaning of the benefit | Improved tolerance of low-CNR threshold behavior; not an automatic high-CNR output-SNR gain | |
The target article describes the PLL as the simpler circuit and reports the larger typical practical threshold-extension range for FMFB. Those figures are source-specific typical ranges; the reviewed explanations do not establish universal receiver performance or the experimental conditions behind the ranges. A separate NASA report describes a 2 or 3 dB predetection SNR improvement over a standard discriminator for PLL or FMFB, but that is a distinct reported measure and should not be conflated with the target article’s practical threshold-extension ranges.

Threshold extension is not a blanket SNR improvement
The principal advantage is most relevant near threshold, where noise can destabilize conventional FM detection. At high CNR, the related FMFB analysis says feedback does not improve output SNR over a conventional non-feedback demodulator when both use the same post-demodulation lowpass bandwidth. The architectural gain is that less noise reaches the discriminator, delaying threshold effects such as phase wrapping—not that the receiver always produces a cleaner output at every signal level.

Engineering context and further reading
FMFB and PLL threshold extension are established approaches rather than a single prescribed modern circuit. A historical patent describes a narrowband FMFB design for single-channel-per-carrier signals that used two-pole crystal filters to improve frequency stability; it provides historical context, not evidence of current availability or a present-day recommended design (U.S. Patent 3,710,183). For historical background, Google Books catalogs G. D. Arndt and F. J. Loch’s A Study of FM Threshold Extension Techniques as a 1972, 49-page work (Google Books catalog record).
