For Android Police author Marvin Velasco, RedReader was the Reddit alternative worth keeping: its ad-free, subscription-free reading experience and adjustable interface outweighed the recommendations and discovery features he missed from Reddit’s official app. That is one user’s preference, not a universal verdict—and the article text names three alternatives he tried, not four: Relay for Reddit, Infinity for Reddit, and Now for Reddit.
Which Reddit alternatives did the author try?
In an article published by Yahoo Tech on September 12, 2026, Android Police author Marvin Velasco names Relay for Reddit, Infinity for Reddit, and Now for Reddit as the alternatives he tried before settling on RedReader. Although the headline says “4 alternatives,” the accessible article text identifies only those three trial alternatives. It does not establish a fourth, so there is no basis to add another app to the list.
Velasco characterizes Relay, Infinity, and Now as attractive and customizable, but says each requires a subscription at some point. That reflects his account at publication; current pricing and subscription terms are not established here. Read the Yahoo Tech article by Marvin Velasco.
Why did RedReader convince him to switch?
Velasco describes RedReader as open source, ad-free, and subscription-free. Its appeal was not simply fewer distractions: settings for themes, font sizes, layout, thumbnails, and video display let him shape the reading experience. He found the options useful, though he says tuning the interface took time.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

He also preferred the way RedReader’s front page followed a selected sort, such as Hot, Rising, or Best, rather than the recommendation mix he associated with Reddit’s official app. That is his reported experience, not an independent audit of either app’s feed-ranking system.

What does RedReader lack for this user?
NSFW browsing
Velasco says RedReader does not support browsing NSFW subreddits. He suggests Reddit.com in a browser when that access is needed.

Time spent adjusting the interface
The extensive presentation controls were a benefit only after he spent time customizing them. Someone who wants a ready-made feed may value that trade-off differently.
How much storage did RedReader use?
Velasco reports that, after clearing both apps’ caches, RedReader used about one tenth the storage of the official app in his comparison. This is a single-author, device- and app-specific comparison reported by Android Police author Marvin Velasco in 2026—not a general benchmark or a result that should be expected on every Android device.

Should you switch from Reddit’s official app?
RedReader is worth considering if your priority is a customizable, ad-free reading interface without a subscription, and you are comfortable with less recommendation-led discovery and the reported NSFW limitation. If recommendations and finding new communities are central to your use, Velasco’s account points to a real trade-off rather than a clear upgrade.

Availability is another consideration. Reddit’s official download guidance directs users to the App Store or Google Play, while the sources here do not establish how long any named third-party client will remain available or supported. A community discussion describes earlier client shutdowns after API changes, but does not establish the future status of RedReader, Relay, Infinity, or Now. Check the current store listing and app terms before relying on a third-party client.

Reddit’s beta program page, updated August 10, 2026, says the official-app beta focuses on app quality and reducing crashes and breaking bugs; it lists iOS 16 and Android 10 as minimum requirements. That stated focus does not show that the specific complaints Velasco raised—promoted posts and distracting recommendations—have been fixed. Can RedReader play Reddit videos?
According to Velasco’s article, videos can be played with RedReader’s internal player or opened in an external player such as VLC. The article does not claim that one method works better in every case.
