There is no single essential WARDOGS unlock for every player. Choose gear that supports the job you expect to repeat—spotting, healing, building, transport or direct combat—and check the live progression and vendor screens before spending. In WARDOGS, reaching an item’s required level, permanently unlocking it and buying it for a deployment loadout can be three separate costs.
How progression and loadout costs work
WARDOGS is a PC Early Access multiplayer shooter in which as many as 100 players split across three teams to fight for control of a zone. You buy a custom loadout for each life, earn cash through team actions and keep cash between matches. The official Steam listing says there is no single required playstyle: players can fight over the zone, snipe, transport teammates by helicopter, build a forward operating base (FOB) or use an artillery tank. The official store listing identifies BULKHEAD as developer and Team17 as publisher, and notes that the game is evolving in Early Access.
Think of access as three possible steps: qualify by level, pay a one-time fee to unlock the item permanently if required, then buy it again when you add it to a life’s loadout. A level requirement does not automatically make an item free or put it in your kit. Exact labels, prices and progression requirements can change between builds, so confirm them in the current game before committing.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Permanent unlock: A one-time fee where the item requires one.
- Deployment purchase: The cost of equipping the item for a particular life.
Before deploying, confirm that you can access the item, afford the rest of the kit again after a failed life, and still carry the ammunition, medical supplies or tools your task needs. Armor tier and career level are different things; do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

Pick a progression track you will actually use
Compare a path by what it lets you do for the team, how naturally that activity earns relevant progress, its permanent and per-deployment costs, and the space or weight it takes from the rest of your kit. For vehicles, include your comfort with handling them and whether you are willing to risk paying for one repeatedly. The figures below are Season 1 examples, not guarantees for every current build.
| Playstyle | What it enables | Season 1 example or cost consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Recon and spotting | Reveal enemies for teammates and support team fights without relying only on winning direct duels. | In-game binoculars are described as a low-cost support option; check the live vendor for current price and access requirements. |
| Medic | Revive and heal teammates while advancing medical progression. | Reserve loadout space for the medical items needed to do the job. No single current universal medical unlock order is established by the cited guides. |
| Support and construction | Build infrastructure and resupply, contributing to team operations and Support progression. | Season 1 references list the Large Hammer at Support level 8, a $75,000 permanent unlock fee and a $2,400 vendor price. The same update raised the FOB price to $7,500. |
| Driver and Pilot | Transport teammates toward the objective and pursue vehicle-related progression. | Season 1 moved the Heavy Tank to Driver level 35 and put the Artillery Tank at Career level 90 with a $500,000 permanent unlock fee. These are long-term targets, not starter priorities. |
| Combat-first | Fight directly while still helping through objectives, spotting, revives, looting or transport. | Choose weapons around the expected task and budget. The available sources do not establish a universal best gun or mandatory weapon. |
Useful first priorities by playstyle
If you want to help from a distance, try spotting
The beginner guidance recommends in-game binoculars as a low-cost way to mark enemies for teammates. Spotting can reward you when a marked target is killed, so it offers a support route even if direct gunfights are not your strength. These are virtual WARDOGS binoculars, not a recommendation to buy real-world equipment. Confirm the current in-game requirement and price before choosing them.
If you want to play Medic, leave room for medical tools
Revives and healing directly help the team and can advance medical progression. Build the loadout around the task: a weapon associated with Medic progression does not replace the supplies needed to revive or heal. The available guides describe the role path but do not establish one current, universally optimal order of medical unlocks.

If you want to build, weigh the hammer against the whole kit
The Large Hammer is a concrete Support example, but it is not an automatic first purchase. Season 1 references place it at Support level 8, with a $75,000 permanent unlock fee and a $2,400 vendor price. Those are figures reported by the WARDOGS Wiki Team in its Season 1 reference, dated September 10, 2026 and last updated September 12, 2026; check the live vendor because the reference is secondary and game values can change.

That update also lists the FOB at $7,500. The official Steam listing gives starting cash as $10,000, so an FOB consumes most of that initial amount before other loadout costs. Prioritize construction if it is a role you intend to perform, not simply because the item is available.
If you want to drive or fly, treat vehicles as a commitment
Transport can get teammates to the objective and support vehicle progression, but handling skill and repeated deployment costs make this a preference-dependent route. Season 1 moved the Heavy Tank to Driver level 35; the Artillery Tank was listed at Career level 90 and a $500,000 permanent unlock fee. These are long-horizon examples rather than recommendations for a new player’s first spend.

If you want combat, keep your options open
The cited material supports choosing gear for the job and budget, not naming one best weapon. You can focus on combat while still taking opportunities to spot enemies, revive teammates, work objectives, loot or transport players. Avoid spending so much on one weapon or vehicle that the loadout cannot support the way you plan to use it.
What Season 1 changed—and what to verify
The Season 1 reference reports that progression slows from level 6 onward: level 6 requires 9,250 XP, compared with 8,750 XP before the change. It also reports the role-level and price changes above. Treat these as Season 1 figures from a secondary guide to the official changelog, not a promise that every value is unchanged in the current client. Older beta cash examples are not reliable current Early Access prices.
