AirPods 5 adds Active Noise Cancellation to the newer generation, and Apple says it removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. But “AirPods 4” can mean two different models: standard AirPods 4 has no ANC, while AirPods 4 with ANC is the relevant comparison for noise cancellation. AirPods 5 is listed at $129 in the U.S., or $149 with a Wireless Charging Case; choose between them based on the case features and battery life you want.
Which AirPods 4 model are you comparing?
Apple distinguishes standard AirPods 4 from AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Standard AirPods 4 does not have ANC, so it is not an equivalent comparison if noise cancellation is the feature you care about. Compare AirPods 5 with AirPods 4 with ANC to assess Apple’s ANC claim and related battery figures.
Apple’s September 2026 announcement lists U.S. launch prices for AirPods 5, but does not give current prices for either AirPods 4 model. Retail prices and regional availability can vary.

Specifications are from Apple’s model comparison. Battery figures are maximums, not guarantees; Apple says results depend on settings, environment, usage, and other factors. How much better is AirPods 5 ANC?
Apple says AirPods 5 removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent listening-test result, and it compares AirPods 5 with the ANC version of AirPods 4—not the standard model. The announcement does not establish how the difference performs across particular environments or listeners.
Both generations include ANC and Transparency options on the ANC models. Apple also lists Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness among the shared features on the compared models. Supported Apple devices, software, firmware, and content may be required for some features; consult Apple’s comparison for model-specific conditions.

With the case, Apple lists up to 20 hours for AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 with ANC, and up to 22 hours for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Standard AirPods 4 is listed for up to 30 hours with noise control off, a different condition from the ANC figures.
The AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case supports Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers, and USB-C. The base AirPods 5 case charges over USB-C. Apple’s announcement lists the AirPods 4 ANC model with a USB-C wireless charging case. If you use wireless charging, check the exact AirPods 5 configuration before buying: it is a separate $149 U.S. launch-price option, rather than the $129 base version.

Durability and shared features
Apple rates AirPods 5 IP57 for dust, sweat, and water resistance and AirPods 4 IP54. These ratings are not promises that the earbuds are waterproof or immune to damage. Apple cautions that resistance can decrease with normal wear.
Apple lists the H2 chip and Personalized Spatial Audio across the compared models, alongside the shared audio and awareness features noted above. New software capabilities are not automatically available to every owner: Apple says Live Translation requires compatible Apple devices running the latest operating system software, compatible AirPods firmware, and Apple Intelligence enabled, with language and regional availability varying. Apple describes Siri AI as rolling out in beta with iOS 27 and specifies additional device and language conditions. Check current compatibility and regional availability before treating these capabilities as a deciding factor. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement outlines feature conditions and availability.

Consider AirPods 4 with ANC if its current price is attractive
AirPods 4 with ANC remains the relevant older-generation option if you want ANC and do not place much value on AirPods 5’s claimed noise-reduction improvement or the Wireless Charging Case version’s listed battery advantage. Apple’s announcement does not provide a current AirPods 4 price, so compare the actual offer available to you.
Choose standard AirPods 4 only if ANC is not a requirement
Standard AirPods 4 has no ANC. Its up-to-30-hour case figure is specified with noise control off, so it should not be compared directly with the ANC listening totals as though the conditions were the same.
These recommendations are based on Apple’s published specifications and claims, not hands-on testing. Apple says the AirPods 5 models became available beginning September 18, 2026; prices and availability outside the U.S. may differ.
