After plugging in a new Cisco switch, identify its exact model and software release, configure secure management, align VLANs and ports with the site plan, check spanning tree and uplinks, then verify and save the configuration. The details vary by platform, so use the matching Cisco getting-started and configuration guides rather than treating one model’s defaults or screens as universal.

1. Identify the switch and choose its documented setup path

Before changing settings, record the switch’s exact model, software release, intended role, and location. Then consult its hardware guide and software configuration guide for the correct initial setup procedure. A Catalyst 9300 IOS XE 17.15.x guide, for example, documents a Day 0 WebUI workflow; Cisco’s Catalyst 3850/3650 best-practices guide describes CLI-oriented management configuration. These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable instructions for every Cisco switch.

Depending on platform, the initial workflow may expose settings for device name and location, time, management addressing, site profiles, VLANs, spanning tree, DNS, NTP, SNMP, ports, and VTY access. The actual screens and available options depend on the model and release.

Choose WebUI or CLI access

Use the setup method supported by the switch and appropriate to its current state. A console connection is one way to access the CLI, but it is not a universal requirement: some models and setup states offer a WebUI path. Cisco’s Catalyst 9300 hardware guide documents CLI access through either the RJ-45 or USB console port and lists console cables as optional orderable parts. Check the exact hardware guide and box contents before buying an accessory; connector type and inclusion vary.

Cisco Business CBS110-16T Unmanaged Switch | 16 Port GE | Limited Lifetime Protection (CBS110-16T-NA)
  • SWITCH PORTS: 16 -Port 10/100/1000
  • SIMPLE: Plug-and-play without a need for IT know-how or support.
  • FLEXIBLE: Extensive portfolio provides ultimate flexibility from 5 to 24 ports and PoE combinations
  • PERFORMANCE: Gigabit Ethernet and integrated quality-of-service (QoS) intelligence optimize delay-sensitive services and improve overall network performance.
  • INNOVATIVE DESIGN: Elegant and compact design, ideal for installation outside of wiring closet such as retail stores, open plan offices, and classrooms

2. Set a unique identity and secure management access

Give the switch a unique hostname that identifies its role and site. Set non-shared administrative credentials, configure a management address and subnet, and provide the management network’s appropriate default gateway when required. Restrict management reachability to authorized administrator networks.

Choose the management path that fits the site design and platform: an in-band management VLAN or a dedicated out-of-band management interface. Cisco’s Catalyst 3850/3650 guide documents both approaches; capability and configuration differ by model.

Enable secure remote management, such as SSH where supported and required. Cisco’s Catalyst 3850/3650 best-practices guide advises disabling unencrypted HTTP and Telnet and configuring HTTPS and SSH for secure management. Apply the corresponding documented controls for your specific platform rather than assuming the commands or defaults are identical.

3. Match VLANs, port roles, and trunks to the network plan

Before connecting production endpoints, determine the intended data, voice, and management VLANs from the site’s network plan. Assign access ports to the correct endpoint VLAN. Configure an uplink as a trunk only when the upstream design calls for one, and make sure both ends agree on trunk behavior and allowed VLANs.

  • 48 Ports - Manageable - 48 x POE - 5 x Expansion Slots - 10/100/1000Base-T - PoE Ports - Rack-mountable

Cisco’s Catalyst 3850/3650 best-practices guide states that interfaces are assigned to VLAN 1 by default on those platforms and recommends using a dummy VLAN as the trunk native VLAN to reduce the chance that configuration mistakes or connection errors propagate across a trunk. Treat these as recommendations scoped to that guide and follow your organization’s standards. Cisco’s IOS XE VLAN guide also documents how VLAN database and VTP configuration can affect VLAN state and startup behavior.

4. Check spanning tree and the uplink topology

Keep Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) enabled to prevent Layer 2 loops while preserving redundant paths. A loop can produce duplicate traffic and unstable MAC address learning. Before connecting redundant uplinks, check the existing spanning-tree root and confirm that the planned topology and settings are compatible with the rest of the network.

STP mode must fit both the switch and the existing network. PVST+, Rapid PVST+, and MSTP are not blanket substitutes for one another; choose among supported options according to the deployment’s compatibility needs, VLAN design, and intended root placement.

For Catalyst 9300 switches covered by Cisco’s IOS XE 17.15.x Layer 2 guide, Rapid PVST+ is the default mode. Cisco says the spanning-tree root for each instance should be a backbone or distribution device and cautions: “Do not configure an access device as the spanning tree primary root.” Do not change root placement without a deliberate topology design.

5. Verify operation, review configuration, and save

  1. Check links and port assignments. Confirm intended links come up and endpoints connect through ports assigned to the planned VLANs.
  2. Test management access. From an authorized management network, verify that the configured management address is reachable.
  3. Test required services. Check connectivity to the appropriate gateway and required network services for the switch’s role.
  4. Review the configuration. Inspect the configuration summary or running configuration and confirm the identity, management, VLAN, port, trunk, and spanning-tree settings match the approved plan.
  5. Save using the platform’s documented procedure. Use the applicable command and process for the exact model and software release to save the approved configuration to startup configuration.

Account for VLAN persistence separately from the general configuration save. Cisco’s IOS XE VLAN guidance explains that the VLAN database and VTP mode or domain can affect startup behavior. Its instruction to delete vlan.dat along with configuration files when using write erase is reset-specific advice for ensuring a correct reset—not a routine first-setup step.
