There isn’t enough verified support to name five open-source security apps or claim a personal install routine. A useful Windows shortlist has four tools, each aimed at a different task: isolating selected apps, managing network activity, encrypting data, and managing passwords. They complement—not replace—Windows Firewall and Defender Antivirus.
Choose tools by the job you need done
“Security app” is an umbrella term, not a promise that every tool detects malware or offers equivalent protection. Start with the gap you want to address rather than installing all four by default.

Sandboxie Plus: isolate selected applications
Sandboxie runs applications in a sandbox-based isolation layer. Its project describes the goal as allowing applications to run or be installed without permanently modifying local or mapped drives or the Registry. The Plus project also describes per-sandbox firewalling and configurable restrictions.

Sandboxie Plus is a community fork following the original project’s source release, not an official continuation of the earlier development. Isolation can help separate an application’s activity, but it does not make unknown software trustworthy or guarantee containment in every situation. Check the project’s current installation and compatibility guidance before using it.

Portmaster: inspect and control network activity
Portmaster is a free, open-source application firewall for Windows and Linux. The project lists network-activity monitoring, per-app settings, blocking, and secure DNS among its features. On Windows, its integration uses a kernel driver and Windows Filtering Platform.
Not every feature is free: the project marks some capabilities, including searchable activity history and its SPN privacy network, as paid. Treat Portmaster as an additional network-control layer, not a consequence-free replacement for Windows Firewall. If a network setting blocks something you need, identify the responsible rule or application before changing protections.

VeraCrypt: encrypt data you need to protect at rest
VeraCrypt is for encryption, not malware scanning or general-purpose threat detection. Its project repository provides source code and Windows build instructions, and notes that official Windows binary packages use digitally signed drivers.
Before storing important files in an encrypted volume, choose a password you can reliably retain and decide how you will recover access. Encryption protects data at rest only when configured and used appropriately; losing the necessary password or recovery information can leave the data inaccessible.

KeePassXC: keep passwords in a managed database
KeePassXC is an open-source password manager released under GPLv3. The project supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its download page offers Windows 10/11 downloads. It can help keep account credentials organized, but it does not remove the need to protect the database itself.
Make a backup and ensure you know how to recover the database before depending on it. The project information cited here does not establish a particular database configuration or cloud-sync workflow, so choose a storage and backup approach only after checking current documentation and understanding how you will retain access.

Keep Windows’ built-in protections enabled
Microsoft documents Firewall controls for Windows 10 and 11, including domain, private, and public profiles and advanced rules. It warns that turning the Firewall off can increase vulnerability. If a program is blocked, Microsoft says adding a necessary app exception is generally safer than opening a port; do not allow apps you do not recognize. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus runs in the background by default and scans files and processes users open or download. These utilities address distinct tasks; their availability is not a reason to disable Defender or the Windows Firewall. See Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.

Build a shortlist, not an automatic install routine
- Choose Sandboxie Plus if you have a specific reason to isolate selected applications and are prepared to configure and maintain the sandbox.
- Consider Portmaster if you want per-application network visibility or controls, and review which features are paid before relying on them.
- Use VeraCrypt when you have a data-at-rest encryption need and a workable password and recovery plan.
- Use KeePassXC if you want a password database and will maintain a backup you can restore.
Before installing any of them, check the official project page for current Windows compatibility, release details, and setup instructions. Add only tools that solve a real need for you.
