Yes. You can use an Airtel India SIM abroad if international roaming is enabled and Airtel covers your destination. Roaming is disabled by default. Prepaid customers can buy a roaming pack or pay ₹118 for 28-day service activation at standard rates; postpaid customers can use roaming without a pack, also at standard rates. Check the live Airtel app or roaming page for your destination’s coverage, eligibility and current terms before you travel.
How to get your Airtel SIM working abroad
- Check your destination. Confirm that Airtel covers the country and review the current pack terms and allowances in the Airtel app or on its international roaming page. Coverage and offers can vary by destination and account.
- Choose the option for your account type. Prepaid users need valid service validity and can buy a roaming pack or use the ₹118 activation option. Postpaid users can enable roaming with or without a pack.
- Enable roaming before relying on the number. Airtel says roaming is disabled by default; buying a roaming pack enables the service. For postpaid roaming without a pack, enable it in the Airtel app or through Airtel’s call center.
- Check when billing or pack validity starts. For both prepaid and postpaid packs, Airtel describes activation after the SIM connects to an international network and makes its first chargeable use. Postpaid customers should note that this first use can trigger a charge.
For help, Airtel’s roaming terms list 121 from India and +91 99100 99100 from abroad. Terms and available options may change, so confirm them in Airtel’s current app or on its roaming page.
Which roaming option fits your Airtel account?
Prepaid: ₹118 activation or a bundled roaming pack
Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid option is a 28-day service activation, not a bundle of roaming data or calls. It permits incoming SMS, while data, calls and outgoing SMS are charged at standard rates from your main balance. You must also have an active prepaid pack with valid service validity. If that validity expires, roaming cannot be used under this option; if your main balance is insufficient, only incoming SMS is permitted. Check Airtel’s current prepaid terms before choosing it, especially if you expect to make calls or use data.

If you need included data or calls, compare roaming packs instead. Airtel’s dynamic prepaid recharge page lists the following examples; these are a snapshot, not guaranteed prices or benefits for every destination or account.

Verify your specific destination and the live offer before paying.
Postpaid: choose a pack or accept standard-rate billing
Airtel allows postpaid customers to enable international roaming without buying a pack. Usage is then charged at standard rates and billed monthly. Roaming remains on until you explicitly disable it, so check the applicable rates before using the service if you have not selected a pack.

Airtel also describes a “Roam-Without-Fear” mechanism for postpaid customers in a pack-covered country who have roaming enabled and use the service without a preselected pack. Standard rates apply first; once daily charges exceed ₹698, Airtel says it automatically activates a ₹698 one-day pack. The stated allowance is 1 GB, 100 incoming and outgoing minutes for calls to India and local calls, 10 outgoing SMS, and unlimited incoming SMS through 11:59 p.m. in the visited country’s local time. After allowances are used, Airtel says data speed falls to 80 kbps and additional calls and SMS are charged at discounted rates. The pack is billed in the next bill cycle, and Airtel’s terms say the charge is not waived. This is a terms-based mechanism, not a user-selected pack or a guarantee of eligibility in every country or account; Airtel says thresholds and benefits may change. See the current roaming terms.
When roaming packs start and how validity is counted
Postpaid
Airtel says a postpaid pack is activated and charged after the SIM connects to an international network in a covered country and makes its first chargeable use, such as a call, SMS or data use. Pack days follow the visited country’s local time; Airtel’s example has the first day ending at 11:59 p.m. local time. If you make no chargeable use during your stay, Airtel says you will not be charged the pack rental. Read the current pack terms for details that apply to your offer.

Prepaid
Prepaid roaming packs are paid for upfront, but Airtel says validity begins after the SIM connects to an international network and makes its first chargeable use. Airtel’s eSIM travel guidance says packs can be purchased up to 365 days before departure and activate on arrival and use; because advance-purchase rules can change, confirm the current app terms before relying on that window.
Will Airtel receive OTPs or SMS abroad?
Incoming SMS is allowed under the ₹118 prepaid activation option, and some roaming packs include SMS allowances. That supports receiving SMS, but Airtel’s terms do not guarantee that every bank or service will deliver an OTP successfully in every destination. Confirm that your prepaid service validity is active, your roaming option is enabled, and the destination is covered; if an OTP is critical, arrange a backup authentication method with the sender where possible.

Can you use Airtel Wi-Fi Calling while roaming internationally?
No. Airtel’s Wi-Fi Calling FAQ explicitly says, “No, you cannot use WiFi calling in International Roaming.” Hotel or other Wi-Fi therefore should not be treated as a way to keep Airtel Wi-Fi Calling available while the SIM is internationally roaming. See Airtel’s Wi-Fi Calling FAQ.
What to check before and during the trip
- Control background data: Airtel advises disabling automatic downloads and closing background apps that could consume roaming data.
- Prevent diverted calls: Airtel’s terms advise deactivating call diverts and voicemail by dialing
##002#. - Know excluded network types: Airtel says ordinary roaming discounts do not apply to in-flight Aero Mobile, premium or satellite, maritime, or ship-cruise calls.
- Keep a separate data option in perspective: A local SIM or travel data eSIM may provide destination data, but it does not preserve use of your Airtel number by itself.
- Recheck live terms: Prices, country coverage, eligibility and allowances can change. The amounts above are examples from Airtel’s dynamic page, not a promise for every customer or destination.
