A virtual machine (VM) runs its own guest operating system on virtualized hardware. A container isolates an application process but shares the host’s operating-system kernel. Docker provides tools to package applications as images and run them as containers. These are different layers of infrastructure, and many deployments use containers inside VMs.
What is the difference between a container and a virtual machine?
A VM virtualizes a computer’s hardware. A hypervisor presents virtual hardware to the VM, which runs a guest operating system. A container isolates an application process and its files while sharing the host kernel. Docker’s documentation describes containers as “isolated processes for each of your app’s components.” Docker Docs: What is a container?
| Decision point | Virtual machine | Container |
|---|---|---|
| What it virtualizes or isolates | A hardware-backed machine with its own guest OS | Application processes, while sharing the host kernel |
| Operating system | Each VM runs a guest OS | Containers share the host kernel |
| Typical overhead | Includes a guest OS | Usually less OS overhead because each container does not run its own kernel |
| Isolation boundary | VM boundary and guest OS | Process and container boundary; the degree of isolation depends on configuration |
| Common fit | Workloads needing a separate OS environment or VM boundary | Packaging and deploying applications that can share a kernel |
Containers’ lower operating-system overhead is an architectural distinction, not a guarantee that a particular workload will be faster or cheaper. Neither model is categorically safer: isolation depends on the workload, host, configuration, storage, and operational requirements. Microsoft’s comparison also discusses workload fit and persistence: Microsoft Learn: Containers vs. virtual machines.
What is Docker?
Docker is a platform and set of tools for building, distributing, and running containerized applications. An image packages an application’s filesystem and configuration as a template. A container is the running, isolated process environment created from that image. Docker Engine is Docker’s client-server platform for building and running containers. Docker Docs: What is Docker?

- Image: The packaged template used to create a container.
- Container: The running instance created from an image.
- Docker Engine: The platform that builds and runs containers.
In short, Docker and containers are related but not interchangeable terms: a container is the isolated workload, while Docker supplies tools to work with container images and instances.
What does Docker Compose do?
Docker Compose is a client tool for defining and running an application made up of multiple containers. It is useful when an application’s components—such as a web service and supporting services—need to be managed together. Compose does not change the distinction between an image and a running container; it helps describe and manage a multi-container application. Docker Docs: What is Docker?

Can containers and virtual machines be used together?
Yes. A VM can provide the infrastructure host, with a container runtime running on it and containerized services running above that. This combines the VM’s separate guest operating system with containers’ application-level packaging. Google Cloud gives the example of VMs hosting Kubernetes clusters for containerized workloads: Google Cloud: Containers vs. virtual machines.

Docker notes that container isolation can be configured for networking, storage, and underlying subsystems, so running containers still requires deliberate security configuration.
