To play an audio file, find it in your device’s file manager and open it with an installed audio app. If it will not play, check which format and codec the file contains, then compare them with the app’s documented support or try a player with broader format support. A filename extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Play a local audio file
- Open the file manager on your device and locate the audio file. It may be in Downloads or another folder where you saved it.
- Tap or double-click the file. If the operating system asks which app to use, select an audio player. Choose an “always” or default-app option only if you want that app to open similar files in the future.
- Check that sound is coming through the intended output, such as the device speaker, headphones, or a connected audio device.
The exact controls and app choices vary by device and operating-system version. If opening the file does not start playback, use the checks below rather than assuming the file extension tells the whole story.
Check whether the player supports the file
Audio compatibility depends on the player, operating system, and the encoding inside the file. Some formats are containers: a WAV file, for example, can hold audio encoded in different ways. Microsoft notes that WAV playback depends on available codecs, so seeing “.wav” at the end of a filename does not by itself establish that Windows Media Player can decode its contents.

| Player or platform documentation | Documented audio examples | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Media Player 12, as described by Microsoft Support | MP3, AAC/ADTS, M4A, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and WMA | The page is for Windows Media Player 12. Microsoft says additional formats may work with further codecs; WAV support depends on the codec used and its availability. |
| Android platform, in the Android Developers supported-formats matrix | Examples include MP3, FLAC, and PCM/WAVE | Consult the matrix for the specific format, container, and Android version. Platform support does not guarantee that every file-manager app offers the same way to open a file. |
| VLC, in its feature documentation | Examples include MP3, AAC, FLAC, and WAV | VideoLAN documents broad format capability; support can still vary by build, device, and particular file. |
What to try when playback fails
Confirm the file and its format
- Check the full filename and extension in the file manager. An extension can help identify a likely format, but it does not confirm the codec inside a container.
- Compare the file’s format and, where relevant, codec with the player’s official documentation. For Windows Media Player 12, use Microsoft’s supported-file-types page; for Android platform formats, use the Android Developers matrix.
- If the file came from a download, consider whether it finished downloading and whether the file may be damaged. These are general troubleshooting checks, not proof of a particular cause.
Try another player before changing the file
If the installed app does not support the file, try a player with broader documented format support. VLC is one option; get it through VideoLAN’s official distribution channels and check that the version is appropriate for your device. Its about page describes VLC, while its feature documentation lists broad media support. Neither page guarantees that every build will play every encoding.
Do not start by installing a codec pack or converting the file. First establish whether the current player supports it. Conversion is a separate choice that can affect audio quality or metadata, and the right settings depend on the source file and intended use.

Choose a player for your device and file
Start with the player already installed: it may handle the file without extra setup. If it does not, choose an alternative based on the exact file format and codec, your operating-system and app version, whether you need local-file playback or streaming, and the output device you plan to use. A support list is a useful compatibility guide, but it is not a promise that every file with a matching extension will work.
